Hi All

I have made a post on arthritis in the neck which not many people gave advice, I do know you are not doctors but what I really want to know could this be arthritis in the neck & your opinions would be most appreciated. I get a burning sensation in the shoulders & top of the back where the neck bone is & have a constant sore throat. I have seen a ENT who said my vocal cords are red but could not give me a reason as to why & he also said which made me even more nervous, I dont think i missed anything if you come back in 3 months if it was cancer it would have grown considerably. So I kept following it up & had a neck xray which showed narrowing on the neck, the doctor seemed to think it was arthritis & a possible pinched nerve which would explain the narrowing of the neck. Me being so scared of cancer asked could it be that & she said no. Because I was shocked at the results I never really asked many questions, I am scheduled to have an mri on the 15th of April & once I have had the results she said to book a spine doctor for injections in the neck & possible surgery. What could an mri show what the xray did not this seems to be bothering me as I feel maybe they are not sure what it is & there could be a possibility of cancer but would she say no.

To be honest this has been driving me mad cause i have had this for over a year now & had all sorts of test done for example ultrasound of the liver & gallbladder and pancreas. Endoscope of the stomach & esophagus for acid. xray of the spine which came out normal so this is why i am shocked I would need to see a spine doctor if its the neck, i know its all connected but if they were that certain it was arthritis why not send me to a ruemy.

I know this is probably caused anxiety & I am sure that makes the pain so much more worse cause when I feel stressed i get the burning feeling a lot more.

please if anyone has had the same symptoms because they have arthritis please let me know as I am really worried cause i do have 2 young children to look after one age 20 months & the other 9 months which makes it so hard when I am constantly in pain the only releive I get is when i am sleeping.

Thankyou so much for letting me vent.

I have the burning in the shoulder and neck muscles you mention and it is related to my RA. I don't have the sore throat. One thing that came to mind when I read your discription and that they might be looking for with an MRI and would explain certain types of sore throat is osteophytes. If that is what you have and its troublesome or causing a potential chocking hazard they will probably recomend they be removed.
We are not doctors so certainly can't diagnos your condition through a breif discription but it sounds like your doctor is on the right track.

Oh, I realized after hitting submit that I have some things I do that really help with the pain which might help you.
First a hot rice or herb bag drapped over my neck and shoulder when I am sitting around helps tremendously.
Also about ten times a day I very slowly and carefully stretch my neck and shoulder. I start by sitting up really straight and stretch my chin down to my sternum. Then with my head in a neutral position lean my ear toward first one shoulder then the other-very slowly I am not trying to make myself hurt just relaxing into the stretch then do the other side. Then I try to rotate my neck so that my chin line rests on top of my colar bone.
I hope some of this is helpful.

Hi sj

Thankyou so much for your reply. Osteophytes what is that ? Lol see shows you how much I know. Also an xray would not show a trapped nerve so maybe thats another reason. The sore throat its very hard to explain its not like my voice changes but it feels very sore was wondering if there was inflammation that may cause the vocal cords to be red, i will ask the ENT on the 28th my next appointment.

I really must stop googling the net cause everytime I do put my symptoms in it brings up cancer this is why I get very scared.

Also I know I must suffer anxiety as a lot has happened in the last 3 years, I have got married to an American & moved here from England, I also have a 20 year old daughter who is staying with my mum cause she likes her night life there & also had to children with this marriage in the last 2 years.
As we all say there is no place like home but at the moment would be very difficult to move back there.

O well enough of my rambling & thankyou so much for your reply. I really do need to make another appointment at the doctors so I can get more information.

Thankyou

Osteophytes are a bony protusion from your spine-they can impinge on your throat making it painful to swallow, they can also cause the narrowing you mentioned and the burning muscle pain, an MRI would definetly show them but as you implied there a multiple things that can cause those symptoms so you need to stay in communication with your doctors and let them help you figure out what is going on.
We are always here to lend emotional support and give what humble advice we have.
