Hey everybody ! How are you all doing? I have a question. I recently had an MRI of that sore shoulder I've been complaining about. Up till now they have done an xray, cortizone shots, PT, and nothing was working. The MRI showed a torn rotator cuff tendon, so I see a Surgeon tomorrow morning. I just had my remicade tx last friday, and take methotrexate weekly. Do I have to wait to have surgery, if thats whats needed, until these are out of my system? I have read on here where someone has surgery and can't wait to get back on the meds they had to stop for the surgery. I know the Dr will be able to answer this, but I am antsy and want to know sooner than that, lol!  Also I am very scared about having it done i.e. the pain, immobility, etc... Can anyone give me a little insite to all of this? One good thing is that is my left shoulder, and I'm a righty! Take care , Joy mad

hi kibs, sorry to hear about your shoulder in need of repair.  I have been told a torn rotator cuff is painful like my frozen shoulder was - hang in there.  i also thnk i am the person who had the surgery you are inquiring about and yes for ideal healing and infection control i was told a min of 2 weeks off meds - and that was with enbrel which is only systemic for 1 week.  remicade last much longer so i definetly would let both the surgeon and your rhuemmy know.  i postponed my surgery til january but because it was gallbladder it could have been emergency at any moment so i was off my meds for 6 weeks prior to surgery and then i could nt return to my meds til ...... i think it worked out to be 5 weeks post op.  so go figure 3 months without meds i was in pain!  plus it has taken a bit to build the mtx back up in my system!  so i am still not where i was prior to op but doing much better.  let me know what the doc says.
good luck ...... yally

Thanks Yally. So are you saying beings I'm on Remicade every 8 weeks, and MTX every week, and just had an infusion, that I may have to wait 8 weeks before having surgery so that the remicade and MTX are out of my system? I sure hope not. I will need my husband home with me after surgery and he goes back to sea in a month. He says if I have surgery asap he will be able to be home with me for a month, then posibly take an extra month off. Oh heck, here I am rattling and haven't even talked to the surgeon. I'll let you know this after noon what the man says lol. Thanks again, Joy

Ok so the tendon is torn clean through and he schedualed surgery for next Thursday. The only thing he was concerned about was me going off the prednisone. He called my Rheumy and she was tapering off anyways, so I just get to stop them. Was already down to 2 mg a day. So I'll let you all know how it goes. Oh I have to stop the MTX too. Thanks again Yally, Joy

Kibbles, I had rotator cuff surgery in 2005 and partial shoulder replacement in the same shoulder in 2006. I was on Imuran for the first one and Remicade for the second. My surgeon covered me with IV antibiotics and I healed up just fine from both. Endoscopic shoulder surgery isn't bad at all, but I always hate the rehab.
