I normally hang out on the Ulcerative Colitis board but I have a question for you guys. I started having pain in my left hand several weeks ago. It felt like someone beat it with a hammer. It hurt to straighten it out and to make a fist. Now the pain is constant - it hurts to try to hold anything in that hand and at times it just aches in general. I've had some arthritis here and there in my knees and back and that is normal with Ulcerative Colitis. I just wonder why I have this in just the one hand? The right hand has no pain or anything similar to what is going on in the left. Any thoughts?

I've had the exact same thing only in my right hand. I described it the same like I'd been hit in the hand with a hammer. Smashed with a hammer. Its interesting to hear someone else experienced this. I couldn't make a fist either and it was really painful. I can't tell you why it happens. It went away and I haven't felt that in a long time. Blue-Emu might help though.

Angel, well that sort of happens to me too. Only for me it usually means that as the rt hand (or knee, elbow, shoulder etd.) is getting better the left one will be starting to swell up and hurt. My arthritis is primarily symetrical but off by a week or two. Everyone is different though.
I agree with jack though-any of the arthritis creams may help.
Are you still on 10 mgs a day of pred and having that much pain? I would call my doc.

Ihave Ra and it usually affects the same side. But on occassions I have had one joint to hurt worse than other. You have clearly described the pain I feel in hand(s) when I am flaring. When any of my joints hurt ( hands seem to be worse) I take pain meds, rub "STOP PAIN" on and cover with socks, gloves, or blanket. Mot of the time I use all these things at once. Then I sit back and wait for all to kick in. Of course, I have heating pad and heater on while I wait. I have tried many lotions or creams to help with my pain and STOP PAIN has been the best so far. Now, after I use it for a few months it doesn't seem to do much. So, I stop for a month and then start back. Once again it works. I really miss the comfort it gives while I a waiting. Just do what I did, experiment with the ones available and find what orks for you. Good luck.

Thanks guys. It got much worse so I went to see my doc. He sent me to a hand surgeon and said it's one of two things that both require steroid shots in my hand since I can't take NSAID medications. Went to the surgeon, he said he wants to do an electrical study which I am doing tomorrow morning. He said it might be a pinched nerve and wants to be sure it isn't before he gives me the steroid shots. Ugh. I feel like I have no circulation in that arm anymore so I just want one of these docs to help me!!!!! Good luck to you guys who have the same symptoms - it isn't fun.

Almost - due date is 12/21! We are flying up for an appointment next week where we hope to learn the sex. We're very excited needless to say!

Nerve study showed my main nerve down my arm is pinched. ugh!

i've been suffering for arthritic hands for about 3 years now and tried everything so i know what you're going through - lots of pain and swelling and grating and lack of mobility.  i went to see a rheumatologist and was on meds but it didn't really work.  it was more for pain management.  i know there's not a permanent cure for arthritis - if that's what it is - but it does sound like some sort of joint problem?  the only thing that worked for me was this natural supplement - it took about 3 weeks to kick in but once it did, i really do feel so much better.  like i said i know the pain you're going through so just wanted to share what worked for me:
