I'm scheduled for carpal tunnel surgery along with a new form of joint replacement surgery on my thumb base. From what I'm understanding, my doctor is "cleaning out" the arthritus in the thumb joint and inserting some glob of material that draws calcium from bones and forms a new joint as the calcium grows.
I know this sounds like a terribly unsophisticated description, but it's the way I understand what he said...I'm wondering if anyone else has had this done, and with the carpal tunnel surgery, how's the after-operation time?

I have never had carpal tunnel surgery but my mother in law just had it done last year. She wasn't in any pain afterwards
and her hands were wrapped for about 6 weeks afterwards. She had one hand done, and then the other.
Good luck!!

Hi.

I have had surgery for basal joint arthritis on my thumb.  My thumbs were so sore that i had basically lost use in them and they just hurt all the time.  I still need to have it done on my other hand -- but I will have it done soon.

The procedure involved removing the thumb joint and replacing it with a tendon from my forearm.  I was out of work for nine weeks -- the surgeon thought that was too soon to go back to work (I work at a store and use my hands A LOT!).

I was in a cast for 8 weeks, the pain was of course pretty bad for about two weeks.

Went for physical therapy for several weeks.  I have to say that it was worth it.  I don't have as much strenght in my hand but I don't have the pain either.

Good luck!
