Good Morning,

I am taking 8 mg mtx orally once a week.  The past few days I almost thought my pericarditis was returning, but I think it is in the lungs that I am feeling discomfort.  I took benedryl chest cold medication and got relief from the symptoms.  I read up on the net that MTX can cause lung problems..not just limited to liver problems.

Has anyone here had this problem?

Thank you in advance for any feed back

Hugs
Diane

I understand that mtx can cause an allergic reaction in the lungs for suspectible people, but according to my rheumy, it is a very rare effect.  When I first started taking mtx, I developed a very bad dry cough, with peribronchial cuffing in my lungs, and I ended up with a full pulmonary work-up as a precaution.  Evidently, it was just some strange virus I had caught, and was not associated with mtx, as I did the re-challenge with mtx and I've been on it successfully for almost a year now.  I would recommend that you contact your doctor, though.  It sounds like you could have some type of infection, or inflammation, in your chest somewhere.  Also, 8mg/week is a fairly low dose--I believe 12-15mg/week is about average for most people, although some go a lot higher.  I currently take 15mg/week, though I started off taking 7.5mg/week.  I didn't gain any benefit from the mtx until my dose was increased to 15 mg/week.  Since you're new to mtx, I would definitely call your doctor for reassurance, if nothing else.

I hope the mtx helps.

The mtx lung problem is very rare, it generally includes a dry cough but any lung problem should be investigated by a doctor espescially in someone who has had pericarditites.

Thank you for your replies.

I am pretty sure I just have an upper resp infection going on.  Had a fever most of yesterday, and up early this morning.  I will go to the ER, as it is getting increasingly difficult to take a deep breath.  I know it isnt pericarditis because they told me that if you feel relief when you lean forward..that is a common sign.  I am not having that. (knock on wood)
Hope you are having a decent start to your day

Gentle hugs

Yes you do get flu like symptoms pains in your chest, ribs, sinus headaches sinus pressure you might get sores on the inside of your mouth where your cheeks are you might get a bad cough due to chest problem like a chest cold and sometimes that causes fever and more fatigue than ususal, bad body aches. I've had it all I have Psoratic Arthritis. Methotrexate makes a lot of people get upper respiratory infections and if real bad can even turn into pneumonia. so keep an eye on it any of these symptoms call your rheumy quickly.  Hope you start feeling better soon. Let me know how you are doing.   Take Care. PR Glo

Thanks again for your support :-)

I went to the ER last night...and yep...I have upper chest infection. They have me on antibiotics, and I see my family doc next friday, to make sure it cleared up.
No one would commit themselves whether it was from the MTX or not.  I was told I would need more than one infections before anyone would suspect MTX

Hope you are all having a pain-free day.

Hugs
