Hi all,

I'm new on the Arthritis board...I just found out that I have early arthritis in my left knee (I'm in my 30's!).  No one in my family has arthritis, and I'm just wondering since it's an inflammatory condition, if stress can cause it?  Your thoughts and insight to this newbie are much appreciated!

Best Regards,

Well Hi there

Welcome to this wonderful board. You know when I read your question, I had to take a double take. You see, I was only reading about this very thing yesterday under "can anxiety cause arthritis"? There are alot on this post who feel that it can.

I alone in my family have rheumatoid arthritis, so I can say it is possible to be the only one

I am just wondering though, could your arthritis be a result of wear and tear on that joint?
This wear and tear is quite common and will be a result of use of that joint. Resting it will help.

Can you think of a reason why your knee is inflamed? Can your knee be stressed because of  physical activity?

So I would say yes,  a joint can be inflamed both by mental stress and physical stress.
The joints of the legs are most suseptable because they bear so much weight on them.

I believe my severe Osteoarthrits was caused by overuse and abuse of my back and
shoulder. I operated a daycare for two and three year olds and was always bending
to pick up a child or I tucked a child under my left arm and went around doing
puppet shows, etc.
My arthritis gets way way worse when I'm stressed. My arthritis is made worse
by stress. Stress didn't cause it.
Somehow my legs avoided arthritis even though I ran around constantly while
taking care of the kids.

Hi 4Support,

Did your dr by any chance tell you what kind of arthritis is in your knee? If not call & ask. The most common type is osteoathritis. It usually hits the major joints because it is a wear & tear type of arthritis. Our knees take so much stress from the body this is not uncommon to happen even w/o an injury. If the knee becomes troublesome, get back in to see your dr, there are many things that you can use either OTC or prescription.

My daughter ran track all thru jr high and developed it in both knees from doing that. Her poor knees really gave her fits. She would not give up track and she suffered with it, mainly during track season.

Susie,
During my running days I really hurt my knees. Knee pain is one of the worst, I
swear. One hot day at the track my knee started causing problems. I started
crying and kinda had to crawl home from the track. Fortunately it was just a block
from my house.
At this time, I gave up running and did Aerobic Dance. Sometimes I think all
my activity and all my house moving were very hard on my wee body. I dunno.

You daughter will always have to watch her knees.
