I'm new to having RA and am wondering once things settle down on the MTX do you still get flares or are you supposed to be symptom free for a long time? I am just starting the meds but a friend of mine has had RA for 2 years and hasn't had any symptoms while on it. When I read these posts I think maybe she is just lucky. So normally - will a person still have symptoms and flares while on the MTX?

Thanks for you help.

There is NO normal each person will react differently.

I started MTX just over a year ago-I went about 6 months with very few symptoms then my doc lowered my plaq dose and I had a major flare-she upped my mtx to 20 mgs (I had been on 15) and I am now 3.5 months with no symptoms at all. I am on three meds though and it seems to take all three of them to keep things quite.

I have also had RA for a few years now and a on Monday morning of this week, I woke up with no joint pain..none! I thought I was in remission or it was gone.  So I hopped on the tread mill, and the next morning it was all back full force and has been ever since.  I'm also on MTX and other than that one day, I have never went a day with pain/stiffness or fatigue.  My rheumy tells me it is virtually impossible and so yes in my case I've taken just about everything even the biologics and still flared. It can be dissapointing I know, but like SJ mentioned it is so different for each individual.  There is a lady on the moanin board who is on the Enbrel and able to do kickboxing on a regular basis, I can go to the gym but find the next day I'm sitting it out.  It just depends on the treatment and the person.

I know what you mean. Yesterday I felt better than I have in 6 weeks. Almost normal and I thought it may be going away! Today everything is back in full force and spreading to new places. I feel like the tin man.

Yeah Tuff me too! Thought I was the only one that called myself the 'Tin Man or Woman'. Exactly how I feel and have for some time. I'm on Plaquenil, MTX, pain meds and take about 8 ibuprophen a day. I will have a good day but seems if I do anything, go shopping, exercise or anything else I wake up the next day in horrible pain that does not go away. And mine too seems to be going to new places. I have an appt with a new Rheumy next month, I want to try something else.
