Hi - I'm new to the RA forum. I've had joint pain problems on and off for years - mainly hands, wrists, elbows & occasionally knees; both sides but not really swollen just aching and tender if pressed. But........ I have also had sacroiliac trouble over the years as well. I've put all this down to playing sports for many years and general wear and tear.
Because of Crohn's I am not allowed now to take Ibuprofen (NSAID) and therefore haven't been able to get on top of the pain/inflammation in the same way so I checked with my gastro consultant what I could take - he has now put me on Celebrex (Cox-2) and says it looks likely I have RA but doing tests to find out. A recent CT scan showed mild bilateral sacroliitis. My Crohn's is mild and previous joint problems haven't been linked to bowel problems.
From what I've read about RA it doesn't seem to include the sacroiliac  problems - these are seems mentioned more for AS but the symptoms for AS don't fit either. Can I have 2 conditions or is that being greedy? Anyone have the horrible aching pains and stiffness without the fever, redness and swelling?
Thanks for reading this and I'd appreciate any insight you can give me.
Diagnosed aged 31 in 1996 - emergency surgery (right hemicolectomy). Thought I'd only get 'it' once and have lived in relatively blissful ignorance, apart from a couple of hospital stays for obstructions (scar tissue), until March 09....major surgery, 2 resections, fistula and now only 195cm small bowel left. Not on any meds at present except B12 injections but know there will be some. Just getting used to my 'new' body and it's limitations........ July 09 hospital stay for obstruction & tests show disease back: now on Asacol and waiting to see which treatment I'm put on

Yes, you can RA as well as others thrown into the mix.  As for the fevers, swelling and redness, I have been seeing my rheumy now for several years (5 years this November) and I finally have developed the fevers and swelling that I have heard mentioned from others. I went years without these symptoms, but did have the horrid joint pain, and thought I had something else and that it would just go away.  Please know that you can also test negative for RA and still have the disease.  I'm sure someone will come along that has the AS and share their experience, but it does seem that these autoimmunes are not limited to just one disease for whatever reason.

Yeah, I agree with mom, we all seem to have multiples of symptoms. I have sero negative arthritis that affects feet, knees, hips, elbows and wrists but I get lower back pain, sometimes neck pain that my rheumy thinks is OA! I also get bursitis in both hips which has proved impossible to fully get rid of, no matter how its treated. We seem to be fairly complex us autoimmuners!!! Its one of the joys of life. We are all different. But best of luck on your search for a diagnosis and treatment. Let us know how you're going, golitho

I have Crohn's and AS too. Maybe your joint pain is from your Crohn's, I know that even when my CD is not flaring I still get joint pain. Get your GI to refer you to a Rheumy so that they can better help you with your pain. It sucks that we cant take the 'conventional' meds for RA due to it upsetting our CD.
Good luck
