My orthopedic recommended that I have ankle fusion.  They will not do joint replacement since I am so young.   I have gotten several opinions and they all agree that ankle fusion is my best bet.  I'm a little nervous....well quite frankly scared.  Has anyone had this done or know of anyone who went thru this.  Im trying to find out if it works and how much its going to limit me.  What the healing time is etc.  Thanks! confused

Hi Nikiangle,

Noticed your post and was interested as I have AS and the area that they can't seem to help is in the ankle/foot!  I am on remicade at the moment and just been taken off mthx as my liver markers this week were sky high!!  All a lot more involved than that but one thing we have talked about in the past has come up again and that's surgery. I'm not sure if it's fusion/replacement or other, the only thing I've been told is that with AS in the bones in that area the operation would involve removing the muscles/tendens from the leg, then remove the effected bone bits, re-attaching the muscle/tendons etc after.  A huge operation and off my feet 3 months, then 3 months learning to walk again!  I for one have said no so far as the outcome of it all isn't certain and it has other implications for me going under the knife.  I feel for you and will wait and see what others have to say to you as maybe fusion might be an opinion for me?  My rheumy has said that we are fast running out of options now and we will have to discuss it further after the MRI I'm having this week.... good luck and I;m thinking of you. I'm sure there will be replies to help you with making a decision.
Peggy.

Wecome to forum!I have been told the same thingover the last 4 years, refused the fusion because of my research and seeing friends have it ,then I saw the way they limp and also he still had pain, also the arthritus moves to the next moving part of the foot from the fusion agreed to have a wedge put under the heal to shift my weight to the part of the ankle that still had some cartlidge,it turned out to be extensive and about ten weeks later I was finaly out of the boot, the problem is it didn't help a bit.I asked Kaiser again but at 58 they said I was too young, and that they were not perfected yet and need redone again in 5 years.I kept the research going and found out their are alot of succesfull replacements going on and much newer technology.I ended up up changing my health insurance to UHC where I have more choice on who I go to.The first month of 2011 I went to the Panarama Othepedic and spine center in Golden Colo,Dr C examined me and told me he could definately help me and eliminate most the pain,he showed me a new "star"http://www.inbone.com/ that he would use,I decided to do it until my blood tests revealed I had a high PSA,yes,I had Prostate Cancer,I proceded to have it removed 5/31/11,had an issue from the suspect Davinci prosectomy and ended up with a ingunel hernia, after 8 days in the hosp they finaly repaired it 6/25 ,I completely forgot about my ankle during all this. Now I am back to Tia Chi,fishing, and active again my ankle started hurting badly,I went back to Panarama, revisited DR C and I will have the replacement this NOV.he again told me how many of his patients have no PAIN..I would reconsider the fusion and make sure it is right for you. cool  INBONE ANKLE REPLACEMENT...I am on day 11 after the the inbone replacement,I am doing quite well, the pain is less everyday,I had the splint taken off and thewound is healing qite niecely,I had much more pain the first operation at kaiser,I can move my foot, wiggle my toes, and I can flex my foot,I stayed in the ORTHO HOSP two days, this helped alot for the pain management, going home the same day after these are hard and way more painfull. The new ST AnthonyHospital,Lakewood Colo was great.I can only be patient and wait for therapy, and hope for the best,as of now Iam really happy I didn't do the fusion Kaiser would only do. turn gams
