Hello.
I'm 20yrs old, and have been fighting arthritis for about a year now. It started by large swelling in my foot, but after moving slowly to my ankle, rapidly progressed to the rest of my body. It's in every joint now, especially periferal, and only minorly affects my spine and SI joint. So, the problem is all the Dr's I talked to thought it was AS from the symptoms and a family History, until they got an MRI back that had no evidence of spinal fusion etc.. My Rheum. has settled on rhematoid as a running diagnosis, but thats just to get health coverage, since it doesn't have all the necessary symptoms (symmetry and joint fusion etc.). This is causing us problem since he can't get coverage for biologicals to treat AS and are really just putting me on every med possible until they can slow it down. Some of these meds have been over a year now and I'm beginning to worry about the effect of the high dose on my body (prednisone and the high amount of tramacet for example).
Does anybody here have a simular experience, or any knowledge that would help me?
Thanks for reading, even if you don't respond.
Hope your evening is going better than mine.
Marg.

Hi Marg and welcome to the RA forumsmilewinkgrin

You sound like a medical mystery to the Dr.s.

So its not AS but it is some form of RA. Im guessing that you have had all the appropriate scans and x-rays for them to come to this conclusion.

The only thing I could think of was maybe you need to up the Methotrexate (how many mgs do you take now?).

I wouldnt worry about having taken pred for a year - Ive been stuck on it for nearly 7 years straight now and am slowly tapering off because of starting Humira and its working so well for me.

You could also seek another Rheumy's opinion - again Im just throwing this out there:-)

I wasn't much help, but I am sorry you are suffering so.

Hopefully someone who has had the same problems comes along and answers better than me:-)

Please keep us updated

Jo

I'm sorry to hear you're not getting relief with your meds..this happens so often with those of us who suffer with RA.  Have you tried Plaquenil? It can work wonders, although it takes a few months to really kick and get relief. If you can't try the biologics just yet, maybe ask your doctor about the plaquenil, and if you are not at your max dose of MTX, possibly increase that as well.
