hi everyone- I was just wondering if anyone had experienced any problems with their nails breaking since being on methotrexate? I am on 15mg methotrexate per week and my nails are breaking so easily! Also my hair is thinner but I knew this may happen. My rheumy is increasing my dose to 20mg in 2 weeks time and im worried the side effects will really start then. Has anyone experienced increased side effects when they increase the dose. Also is there a vitimin you can take to help with hair and nail symptoms? Im so confused about this drug- every week is different for me and my inflammation is up and down every time i have blood tests so I wonder if it is not working for me.

Yes I have this too! I think that taking some folic acid has helped and also solar oil 3 times a day.

I have been taking 5mg of folic acid 48 hours after the methotreaxate but I'll definitely try your tip on solar oil! Thank you for letting me know that!

My rhuemy has me take folic acid every day. i don't think once a week is enough. My nails do not break and my hair is not thinning. I know everyone is different but maybe discuss taking folic acid more often with your doctor.
I also take fish oil and using solar oil on the nails is great.
My blood work goes up and down a little every time it's drawn too but not a lot. I think it's just the way ouur bodies work we don't stay the same every minute,

Good luck

I take 5000mcg of biotin daily. Someone suggested this when my hair was falling out due to MTX. Not only is my hair better then it's ever been (it was always fine and limp) but my nails are growing long and hard as well! Give it a try.

I've been on mtx since begining of Aug. Now up to 15mg also. My hair is thin and falling out and my nails break alot to the extreme that I woke up one morning and one of my nails had broken off nearly to the bottom. Two months ago pain still bad and CRP had Only gone down to 38.5 so Rheumy said it was obvious pills weren't being absorbed so two weeks ago started giving it to myself in injection form. Maybe this would be worth discussing with ur Rheumy. With regards folic acid, u should take at least 15mg in a week as that's the dose of mtx ur on. I was on 15mg but because of repeated mouth sores I now take 5mg daily except mtx day. I hope this has been of some help to u! Go Well X

My RD only allows me 1 mg folic acid each day. He says anymore negates the effects of MTX.
