Hi there.  my husband stated methotrexate for his RA one month ago and has been pain free for the first time in about 16 months yay!!  He is so exhausted much of the time he has started talking with a bit of a slurr by the end of the day (i worried about drinking, he insists no)  i want to support and help him can anyone advise if they felt or feel the same and what is the best way for me to help rather than stress him out more???

Hey Coping_not! The slurred speech could be a result of extreme fatigue, drinking, or other health issues. I take methotrexate along with prednisone, plaquenil, and Humira. My rheumatologist told me one time that the fatigue would get better when the inflammation got better. You can't always see how bad the inflammation is. I had been doing much better than I am now. I don't see much inflammation, but my joints hurt more and I am totally exhausted. I feel the need to lie down even when I am lying down. Gravity can be so heavy! Has your husband had any blood work done lately to help give you some idea what is going on with his inflammation markers? Good luck.

Hi Coping Not

I have had RA for 4 years now and have been on methetrextate all that time along with prednisone. My pain is good some days and more painful others especially I am finding in the cold weather. I feel tired also, I have a rest every afternoon, sometimes I sleep and sometimes I just rest my body but I have to. I don't drink though, my specialist made that clear right from the start that you can't consume any alcohol while on these drugs, lucky I have never been a drinker I guess.

I think you should mention it to you doctor next time you see him. But if your hubby says he isn't drinking, then I would believe him and accept that it is the fatigue that is causing the slurring.

I hope I have been of some help, let us know how you get on.

MTX makes me very tired- especially the afternoon of and day after taking.

I had the same problem with the methotrexate when I started it-and still do occassionally. The RA itself can also cause extreem fatigue.
For me increasing my folic acid helped with the fatique caused by the MTX. I take 3 mgs a day.

I was very tired on it as well.

Talk to his doctor about it and see if they can increase some vitamins that get depleated while taking the med. I know they perscribed something for me on top of having me take some OTC vitamins. Not sure if there's a difference between men and women and what they need to take.

Also, have him make sure he drinks a lot of water daily. It supposedly helps. And, if he takes the med 1x a week, I know some people take it on days (or was it the day before?) they can plan to take it easy and rest as taking the dosage wipes them out.

Good luck!

Methotrexate is an anti-folate, anti metabolite.
People who take it for RA are usually given a prescription for folic acid to take with it. My doc gives most of her patients 1 mg/day. That did not work for me but 3 mg/day does.

A B-complex is supposedly good for fighting fatigue as well.
