Hello everyone,

I saw my ortho today.  He ordered an MRI of my back and hip.  I can't run my vacuum. It only takes a few minutes and my back stiffens up and hurts like crazy.  Weirdest thing is that the pain wraps around my hip and into my groin area.  Anyone else ever have this happen?

Thanks!
V

It could be many things but 2 ideas come to mind.

1. I've known a couple people who have suffered from similar pain and it was from the siatic nerve. Only their pain went from the back down the buttox and down the leg wich is typical I just read that the pain can sometimes radiate around the hip also. I sure hope that you do not have that on top. Or at least they are able to figure out what it is and can help you soon.

2. My very first noticeable symptom of RA was severe pain in the groin area.
Type 1 Diabetes - Heart murmur - Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA) - Asthma - Raynauds - other stuff

Folic Acid - Fosavance - Methotrexate - Tramadol - Pantoloc(as irritation preventative) - Levemir - Indomethacin - Salbutamol - Actemra - Prednisone - Humalog - Fluconazole - Systane Ultra - Aspirin(81 mgs.) - depo Medrol injection - One A Day Multi Vit. - Cod Liver Oil Capsules - other otcs

Thanks, Ms Ouchie. I thought I was going nuts, but my doctor didn't question me about it, or think I was being weird. When I told her about that pain, she rotated my leg toward my body and I about came off the table. It hurt. Yikes! So she is ordering an MRI, and she mentioned I might need a shot in my back and she wants to know what is going on w/my hip, too. The pain in my back does radiate to my hip...sciatica for sure...but then it also wraps around my side and ends up in the groin. Thanks so much for responding.

Ooh yes!  I remember that pain and rotation well.  It was painful in the first place and then they go and make it worse by trying to force the joint.  I also remember during my Rheumy appointments, I would sometimes have my arm on the desk and my hand hanging over the edge.  He used to flip my hand up to see if I was in pain.  YES!  My wrist had already fused somewhat and didn't go that far up without pain.  He finally stopped doing that since I always yelped in pain and then I'd give him a dirty look. smilewinkgrin

What kind of medication is she injecting in your back?  I got the depo Medrol injection in my hip in Dec. which has helped all my joint pain but isn't good for me of course and lasts about 2-3 months.  This is my second time with it.  I do appreciate being in less pain especially since I'm just getting over a bad flu.  I think some of my other drugs may be helping my RA also, I hope.

It sounds like you have a good Rheumy.  Hopefully the MRI will be helpful too and tell the tale.  Please let us know how it goes and how you are feeling.  YW Vannie!  Feel better.   :-)

Hey, MsOuchie! I read typos fluently. LOL I think that is because I make so many myself. I had two shots in my left hip that helped a lot, but that was before I was diagnosed. I almost had the bursa removed from my hip, too. It was SO painful. Then I was Dx with RA, and my RD said no way to the bursa removal. Since she has been treating me, the pain in my left hip has gone form an 8 to a 2. I'm glad I saw her before I scheduled that surgery! I'm seeing an orthopedic doc for my back/hip. He works with my RD and they keep each other informed. I have my MRI next Tuesday morning. The ortho is talking about some sort of epidural type shot in my back. I work with a woman who has those from time to time. She has really bad OA. I have RA and OA, so not sure which is the culprit. Maybe both...??? I see you have Asthma, too. My asthma didn't bother me fore years ( had it as a child ) until my RA flared up big time. They seem to go hand in hand. Will let you know what the MRI says. Take care!

Hi Vannie.  We got back this week-end and then I had to go to the ER.  Leave it to me!   rolleyes

I know that my groin pain was from RA.  Your back pain may be from your OA and lower pain from Sciatica.  I haven’t had bad or continual back pain except for cramping/spasms.  Oh and just an incident with the coxsys once.  I hopefully do not have OA yet.  My Mom has OA pretty bad and definitely has back pain.  She’s probably had OA for about 15 years give or take.  She has had the injections in the back also which helped some for a while but she said it wasn’t painfree.  Perhaps because she is in her 80’s?

That’s good that your Rheumy decided against them touching the bursa.  Wonderful that your hip pain level is that low.  Your Rheumy is a keeper.  I like her.   smilewinkgrin

Yes, I have had Asthma for many years but it is doing okay thankfully. Except when I had that bad flu recently.  I had a lot of trouble trying to breath and sleep.  Happy it’s gone.

How did your MRI go?  Did you get to discuss the results with your Ortho and Rheumy yet?  Hopefully they can be of help to you.  That machine scares me.  I had my infusion and blood tests done the same day as your MRI.
