You have all heard me talk about Savannah and Jessie, my grand daughters. Matthew(Mychoo) is the older brother. He is 7. Today at school, he was in PE and started complaining of a headache. His teacher let him cry all afternoon and did not call mom to come and get him. By the time he got off the bus, he was in so much pain, he was sobbing loudly. His mom gave him some pain meds and put him to bed. about 8:00 PM he had a Grand Mal Seizure and tonight he is in Childrens Hospital. PLEASE PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM. He has already had a hard lfe. He had testicular cancer when he was 18 months old, hospitalized with high blood pressure when he was 2, Rectal spinchter not working right and now this, what else can happen to my baby.

Flopsie,
I am so sorry. I will definately say a prayer for you and your family. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am going to the church this a.m. to help with a luncheon and will mention your grandson to my pastor for prayer as well. We'll get the power of prayer behind this. May God give you the courage to face and deal with whatever becomes of this.

Hi Mandi,
I just wanted to tell you quickly that no, this is not first seizure. His first one was when he was about 1 year old(He quit breathing with that one), and at that time , docs classified them as Febrile Seizures. Every time he got even the slightest temp, he would seize. Then after about 3 years of age, he never had another one, untill now.

I am really angry right now at this DD (all of them ) that I have and my daughter. She did not call me untill her dad got home from work to tell me, cause she was afraid I would try to drive to the city. So he was already admited and everything before I found out. I did not say anything to her, because she thought she was protecting me.

Hey erin,
He is in a monitoring unit. Until all tests are done and results in, they are calling it Atypical Seizure Disorder. All congenital.

sad  Flopsie - I am so sorry, how is Matthew doing now?  What is Atypical Seizure Disorder?  Does that mean it can happen out of no where again?  Did your daughter talk to his school?  I would be livid.  How are you holding up?  I know you've got a lot going on in your life too, this must be so hard on you... Please don't be mad at your daughter, she was only trying to help and knowing that you are having a hard time yourself, she didn't want to put you under anymore stress than she needed too... I can understand you being upset with her, but it was done out of concern for you.. You hang in there, Matthew needs you right now more than ever... please keep us posted when you can... My heart goes out to you and your family at your time of need... - Duck

Thank you all so very much for the prayers. It is so very hard to have to stay at home and not be at the hospital with Mychoo, but my doctor told me this morning..NO!

Ducky, Atypical means.. in the medical language A means without, so it is same thing as unknown etilogy, in other words..They don't have a clue untill test results are in. His doctor has asked both Mom and Dad to meet with him in the morning at 10:00 AM, and that scares me to death. Of course , he is getting restless now and wanting to come home. He is a very active little boy, usually playing all the time. He has always had medical problems as I told you, was diagnosed with Gerd, when he was about 3 months old. He was only about 1 month old when I was giving him a bath and felt the lump in his groin area. Mom took him to his doc at the time and he told her I was just a worry wart. Same thing about 3 months later, I could tell it was growing. This went on till he was 18 months old, everytime my daughter would take him in , the doc would tell her I was just worrying about nothing. One day I called him before his visit and he told my daughter, that although nothing was wrong with Mychoo, to apease her mother, he was sending him to Children's to be evaluated. That was on Monday, the following Wednesday he had surgery and removed his left testicle.Who know if it was cancerous when it was first discovered, Grandma was just being a worry wart.

She, of course, no longer uses that doctor. Children's hospital here has sattelite clinics and that is where all the chidren go. The docs are wonderful, and will take your call day or night.

His first seizure happened at my house. He was about 1 at the time, and my hubby came walking down the hall with his limp body in his arms and says "hon, I think something is wrong with the baby", Well, he was right, baby was not breathing, and let me tell you..all my training went right out the window, for a few seconds. i quickly recovered, started CPR, called 911, fire dept at that time was directly behind our house, took less than 5 minutes for them to get there.

He was admitted to hospital and after all tests done was diagnosed with Febrile Seizures and continued to have them till he was about 3, but these were brief tonic clonic attacks, not like the one he had yesterday. I know the stats say that only 10% of chidren that have Febrile seizures develop Epilepsy, something is going on with him.

I AM SORRY, I wrote a book, I know long lengthy posts are against the rules, but I just got started and could not shut up.

PS..Just reread all these posts and the tears they are aflowing. I and my family are so very blessed to have an extended family such as all of you.

Thank you all so very much.

Oh Flopsie! sad

This thread has made me cry. It has made me angry. Thank God you had the training and knowledge to be there for him as a child! I cannot believe the things that little boy has had to go through. I cannot describe how all this made me feel. It sounds like if he's getting restless at the hospital, he is starting to feel better. I hope all is well with him and will keep him in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery and that the doctors can figure out what exactly caused this.

As for your daughter not telling you - I would be extremely angry (fuming mad actually) as well, but if you were alone all day and having the health issues you've been dealing with, I might have done the same thing - make sure there was someone home with you when you got the news for obvious reasons. I know it is tough not being there with him, but it is for the best. Can you talk to him on the phone? Hearing his voice and knowing he's doing better can do lots for one's peace of mind.

Now.....as for that teacher....the anger I felt when I heard what she/he did! I cannot say the words on here. To let a child with a massive headache cry all day at school and not call the mother. To even allow a child who claims to be sick STAY at school w/o contacting a parent. Argggh, I can't even write....The teacher needs more than a few harsh words. The principal needs to get an earful as well....possibly the local news to make people aware that the school's policy is not up to par on this situation. Does the school know that he has health issues? If so, even bigger shame on them and his teacher!

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hope all is going well Flop, kids are very tough you know, it make me sad to see them suffer.
Not suprisingly when my son has had a tough go of it, it has always been harder on me and mom then him. Somehow that makes me feel better.

Godd Afternoon All,
Well #1, If Matthew even sneezes at school, Mom will be called, my daughter does not mind letting anyone know how she feels when it comes to her children (Or anything else for that matter). Camama, I was so mad at her I cried for hours, but I understand why she did not call, I have also made her promise that she will always call me when anything happens and I in turn promised not to take off towards the city by myself. Compromise.

#2 Mychoo is feeling better, I talked to him just a few minutes ago. So far no diagnosis for the seizure, but the cat scan showed a mass in his sinus cavity. His WBC's are very high (means infection in body), and he also has a blister-like rash on his face.So really nothing definitive as of yet.Daughter said the doc is talking about letting him come home on antibiotics and Dilantin Elixir and continue tests on an outpatient basis. He is aware that mom has 3 other children at home, the youngest 3 months old and a breast baby.So don't know if that is going to happen ,but that is where we are at this point.

Again I want to thank everyone for your concern and your prayers. God is awesome and he does listen.

Yippee for Mychoo! :) Good deal on the compromise, this way no one is too worried right? She's not worried about you going into the city and you aren't left in the dark about the babies... It is odd that they don't know what is wrong yet... hhhhmmm... ERIN! They need your help in diagnosing Mychoo! :) Keep us posted Flopsie - our thoughts and prayers are with your family always - Duck

Jen, That is what the doc discussed with Mom and Dad today. He is coming home tonight on Dilantin Elixir, as I stated in above post, but doc says this is just a prelimany diagnosis and until all testing complete, it will not be confirmed Epilepsy.

I am glad he is coming home. I will keep him in my prayers that the meds help him feel better and they can get some answers to why this happened.

Dear Flopsie,
I am keeping you and your grandson and all of your family in my prayers. It sounds like it might be time for me to go over to the church and buy another prayer card so all of the members of my church can pray for Matthew and all of his family.
I had promised to do this for Erin and I have a feeling I may have procrastinated and not got it done yet, so I will get three, one for Matthew, one for Erin, and one for all of our other Hw members and their families.
It is nice to know that the doctor is understanding of the fact that mom is breast feeding.
However, I pray that this is the best decision for Matthew. I hope they do not take their sweet time to get the proper diagnostic tests done on an outpatient basis. I am going to send lots of positive thoughts that they will act quickly, get some answers and that Matthew will not have any more of these episodes.
I pray that they get to the bottom of this. May it please be something simple that they can cure quickly and completely so this poor little guy does not have to go through anything else.

I really hope they get these tests done quickly and get to the bottom of this ASAP.

As far as the school goes, make sure the teachers, secretary, and any teachers who teach him other subjects like possibly gym, music, art etc are also fully aware of his condition. The school should have a form that you fill out. If you get a couple of pictures, current, of Matthew, they can also put this info in the health room and staff room so that teachers who are out on yard duty know the signs to look for if they are on yard duty. The classroom teacher should also have this info available in her day book in case she is absent one day.

If any of you would like further information on the work I did to ensure that schools were a safer place medically speaking and in terms of stranger beware let me know and I will email you the work I did or post it here. Then you can share it with your child’s school.

JUST remember that all adults involved with your child need to know if there is any important medical history.

I can not imagine the cruelty of a teacher who would allow a child to sit and cry all afternoon at his desk and not do anything about it.

Hi Mandi and thanks for your concern and the invite. As of right now, he is doing fine. He has another EEG scheduled next week, I don't know why they are doing a second one, but I guess we will learn more as the docs do. His little heart is broken though his doc has said no more football. Hi is not happy with that decision.

Flopsie,

I am new to the board but am sorry to hear about your grandson, I hope that he continues to improve over time and the doctors find out whats wrong and can fix it.  I have children and I know the sense of not being able to do anything is very frustrating.  Your family will be in my prayers

Don't know mandi, the only think i can think of, is before the last SZ, he was lifting weights and got the terrible headache, i wish I knew the answer to that one. I don't know enough about the disorder to know if strain can lead to a SZ. I WILL be educating myself.

Hi Flopsie,

Yes, I know I have been MIA for awhile. rying to get myself sorted out and what a project that has turned into.

I was totally livid when I read your post. That teacher, I hope was taken down a few  notches by your daughter and I hope she also addressed this behaviour with the principle. How many little ones that age would fake something as drastic as what that little fella was going thru. It just makes you want to go for the juglar vein.

I am so sorry to hear about the seizure activity the little guy has. He surely has had his share of medical problems to be such a young little fella, my heart goes out to him. I know understand something my niece has dealt with concerning her 3 yr old daughter. She began running a very high fever out of the blue, began convulsing. She was put in the hospital for a week and they did every rotten test known to mankind. She had a seizure at the hospital so they got to see it first hand. They gave no explanation except that anytime she runs a fever to get her either to the dr or hospital.

I know your daughter was only trying to look out for her Mom, so don't be too hard on her. Glad the 2 of you sorted this out.

Please know that entire family is in my prayers. Please let us know how the little guy is doing. Lots of love & hugs coming your way....Susie

Hi Straydog.
So good to hear for you. Wondered how you were doing, though I did catch a couple of your posts on another forum. Yep Daughter had meeting with Princcipal and I don't think we will ever have to worry about them NOT calling her for anything. She is very outspoken. Matthew had Febrile SZ's untill when he was younger, but then they stopped and doctor says after age 3 or 5(can't remember which) they don't have them anymore. They have diagnosed him with Epilepsy, but as of yet, I don't think they have a clue as to why he started having these again and why they are stronger. He goes back again next week, and I think it is for another EEG. He has had a couple more, but they were very different in nature from the first one he had with the headache,

How are you and how is the knee. Also how did the unit work on your knee, we have not had an update from you. Are you still using it, and is it helping you?

you take care and rest those knees, thanks for asking about Mychoo,
