I'm 37, and have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis for the past 3 years.  Previously, it was relatively mild and easily controlled with the occasional NSAID.  For the past 6 months, it has gotten progressively worse.  I have a lot of pain and stiffness in my hips, shoulders, neck, and tmj.  My rheumatologist has placed me on mobic for the past 4 weeks to try to take the edge off--has mentioned plaquenil if mobic doesn't work.  The problem I'm trying to reconcile is the fact that a mere 6 months ago I was able to exercise strenuously (in fact, it helped the RA quite a bit) for an hour (e.g., spinning, cardio step, running).  Nowadays I hurt so often that I just don't have the motivation or energy to even attempt doing those things.  Needless to say, my gym membership is getting ready to expire.  I have recently (past two days) taken brief 20-30 minute walks during my lunch hour, and that is about all I feel I can handle.  I feel old and not quite with it--I'm embarrassed to show up in my old aerobics class because I don't think I could actually do the whole class anymore.  For those of you with progressive RA, how do you manage exercise during a flare?
Thanks in advance!

Hey elcamino - I have just recently started exercising again... I haven't been able to do anything for 2 years, but I am on Enbrel now and it give me a little more mobility to do the things I enjoy doing... If I am in the middle of a flare, I just do as much as my body will allow, sometimes that's not much, but I continue to do al I can. If I don't, I'll slip back into not doing anything and all that does it make it worse... Keep trying, it's hard and some days you'll feel like you'll never be the same, but slowly and surely you'll come out on top and feel better than you have in a long time... Just gotta give it time - Duck
