Well, its official, my rheumatologist wants to start me os sulfasalazine for RA. She thinks this would be the best approach to take. I really don't like the looks of this med because it seems like it may have a high risk of side effects.

Is there anything out there that is an herbal remedy for inflammation in the joints. I am hoping for anything that is not going to have big side effects. I am also thinking of telling her the I would like Remicade instead of sulfasalazine when I go visit again on monday. I used Remicade for my crohns last year and had no problems at all.

Any herbals you can reccommend would be greatly appreciated!!!

I was on SAM-e 400mg once a day (Amino Acid - over the counter, very safe, you can buy it in the supplement/herbal isle at any grocery store or Drug store) It is natural, that our bodies produce, but declines as we age.  I was on it for three years for joint support and depression.  It worked wonderfully for both depression and my joints.  My chronic lower back pain went away, as did the intermittent pain in my wrists and fingers.  If you would like to know more about it, you can check out the web site at www dot SAM-e dot com.  It is considered very safe and effective for joint paint.  Another natural remedy is Glucosomine and Chromium which is also over the counter.

Rianna, I've been thinking about trying SAM-e, why did you stop taking it if it was helpful?

D-Rule, I have trouble starting a new med myself. They always look so darn scary, but, if you look even Motrin sounds scary. I had good success on azulphidine. But, if you have Chrons, it seems Remicade would be a good choice. Though, that is much more invasive and has its own risks. Your insurance may require her to use a more traditional med on you FIRST before approving a biological such as Remicade.

Many people swear by glucosamine, but it is very expensive. You might find (I have) that certain foods may trigger flares, but that takes time to learn what affects your body.

Good luck**

CaMama - Unfortunately, the SAM-e pooped out on me after the three years, and my depression came back. I don't have enough good things to say about it! I hope you will give it a try (make sure to check with your Doctor or Pharmacist if you are taking other drugs), but it is considered very safe and as effective as prescription antidepressants. There are several articles on SAM-e in Clinical magazines, and it has been well researched and tested. The standard dose is 400mg once a day. Keep us posted!

i also read about cats claw as well...for arthritis inflammation. it's really amazing if you find a great herbalist or one of those herbal/organic shoppes. some of the staff that work there are very knowledgeable and if you're lucky, an educated herbalist or homeopath may work there.
in NJ we habe a "John's" natural foods store...it's really tiny. but i don't think it's a chain. they may be on the web though?

Even places like Vitamin Shoppe which sells stuff like GNC but a WHOLE LOT CHEAPER! Same stuff, just like a generic brand... I love that place!

:-)  Hi,

I'm new just this morning and I'm glad to have something to offer already.  MSM is excellent for immflamation.  It's a natural substance derived from sulfur and I've found good pain relief from it.  It's pretty cheap too.
