Hi I'm new...just found this site surfing thru arthritis sites.  I have not been to a rhuematologist yet (or Dr.)  1-1/2 yrs ago I injured both trigger knuckles...powerwashing for several days.  I'm reluctant to go to a Dr. because I don't want to take unnecessary meds or be snowed by unnecessary treatment.  My gyn. said joint injuries due to overuse can take years to heal and not to worry about it.  I've been taking Alleve every day and trying to remember to take Glucosomine.  What do yall think?  When I take the Alleve, it does reduce the pain and tenderness.  eyes -Knucklain

Hi Knucklain and Welcome to Healing Well.... There are a lot of people here with varying degrees of illnesses, and arthritis.... I am right there with you about not wanting to take unnecessary meds, however, by doing that, I am in a worse situation now, than what I would have be in if I had gone to the doctor early on... If the arthritis isn't that bad, your doctor may say, to just stick with the Glucosamine and Aleve, and do follow-ups with you to make sure nothing has progressed.. you have to be careful, arthritis can also atart to effect your other joints too.... Best wishes to you, keep us posted on how you are doing... - Duck

Thanks! Would you recommend going straight to a rhuem. or an orthopedic? Don't they have very different philosophies?

Hey Knucklain - I would suggest you go to see a rheumy... I went to an orthopedic specialist and it took him 2 years to figure out I had arthritis, then he sent me to see a rheumy... could have saved everyone a lot of heartache and pain... Since rheumies are well versed in the ways of arthritis, you are less likely to get the run around from them... let us know how everything works out... good luck to you... - Duck

Dear Knucklain,
Welcome to HW.  Very glad to have you!
Since you pinpointed the cause of your hand problem, that's a good start!  A first step if you should ever want to pursue MD help, would most likelyto be an Xray of the hand or MRI which can be ordered though your primary MD.  It would identify fractures, inflammation, cysts, tears or any injury.  A rheummy or ortho would do the same thing.
Aleve is good...just watch your tummy.  NSAIDs can cause stomach upset/ulcers...if taken in excess.  But that's great the Aleve's work.
Glucosamine and chondroitin I would definitely stick with.  You can also think about adding an Omega 3 Fish oil, wich will aid as an antiinflammatory.
If they start to swell and hurt badly, rest/ ice or heat and topical menthols and parafin wax dips sometimes help.
When it gets to the point, if it should, that it gets very bothersome...consult with a rheummy or even a hand specialist!  Hand specialist are out there and they sure know their stuff.
Be careful and take good care!!
And keep those puppies warm with gloves this winter too!  tongue
Sincerely
Erin
