Hello, I have RA and am on MTX, 5mg Prednisone and folic acid. I'm starting my first infusion of Remicade in a week. Does anyone mind sharing your experience with Remicade? Including what to expect during the infusion, can I go to work the day of the infusion etc. I'm a little nervous about this medicine!

Thank you!!

Emmie - no need to be nervous! When you get there you'll be brought to a room with big, comfy chairs (probably after they weigh you). Often there will be a TV in the room you can watch. Usually there are other people in the room also getting infusions. The nurse will take your temperature and blood pressure, and probably give you a Benadryl or Claritin and maybe Tylenol (that's what I get). Then they will hook you up to the medicine and you'll have at least a couple of hours while the medicine slowly drips down. There is really not much more to it. I'd bring something to read because it can be boring if you don't fall asleep and there is no one to talk to, and esp. if there's no TV. If they give you Benadryl you may be tired after the infusion, but less so if you get Claritin. For the first time maybe it's best to take the day off from work if you can. From start to finish I would imagine you will be there about three hours, give or take. Where I go they usually keep the room a little too cool for me so I always wear long pants and bring a sweater. I have been on remicade for 10 years for RA and ulcerative colitis and it has enabled me to live a pretty normal life, so it's been a real blessing. Good luck and don't worry. I hope it helps you to feel better too!
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2005 and rheumatoid arthritis in 1998. On Remicade since 2005 for both diseases. For UC tried sulfasalazine, Lialda, colazal and others which made me ill. Started 50 mg. Imuran July 2015. Use Bentyl, peppermint oil capsules and Gas-X which all help with various UC symptoms during a flare.

My Doctor has suggested infusions as well if my increase of MTX does not help to lessen my disease activity so I too am interested in this subject as well. Mine has suggested Rituxin.

Alice, were you on any biologics before moving to Remicade? If so did they help?

Thanks for posting this both of you!

Don - Yes, I was on Enbrel from 1998 to 2005. The only reason I switched to Remicade was because in 2005 I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and needed a medication that would help with both diseases. But I have to say Enbrel was great and I probably would have stayed with that if it wasn't for the UC. The downside of Enbrel is that you have to give yourself a shot which at times I had a little trouble with (I am squeamish about needles so that was probably my own fault.) Also, if you're travelling, esp. overseas, taking Enbrel with you and keeping it cold can be a hassle. But a benefit of Enbrel is that you don't have to take a half day off from work to go to the infusion center as you would with remicade. Also, if you get an infection you can hold off on giving yourself a shot until you get better, whereas with Remicade, since you get infused every 7 or 8 weeks, your immune system is compromised for a longer period of time if you get sick. But they both worked equally well as far as controlling my inflammation and pain.

I have been on Remicade for a year now and as far as disease progression it has done wonders. I have been developing masses since starting the drug and currently have one under both arms and one in my throat which they continue to push off on the meds or RA. I have been researching everywhere to see if there is a link to it but cannot come up with anything.
