Just found this site and immediately registered. I can imagine after reading some of the post and responses that it is a comfort to those seeking support and knowledge. As for me, I have had chronic asthma for 40 years, adult life only, and chronic sinusitis. There were tough moments with attacks and serious infections at first, but for a very long time have been successful with medications for both. Now for the big challenge. I was diagnosed with RA two years ago, due to swollen and painful thumb joints. I started taking methotrexate right away. I took 10 mg once per week for a year or longer. During that time I experienced a production of thick mucus which caused obstruction in my throat and so I would have to cough to get it up. So I was dealing with RA flares and the coughing continuously. The mucus would eventually indicate infection so I would take prednisone and or antiobiotic. The methotrexate was increased to 15 grams per week. The mucus and coughing continued along with the RA flares. I was seeing my pulmonologist once monthly. The breathing test always showed obstruction. After 17 days of prednisone and antiobiotics my RA flares stopped but the coughing did not. The pulmonologist was convinced that the cough was not a result of methotrexate and prescribed spriva and increased my Advair from 200 to 500. My Rheumotologist considering the methotrexate may be causing the cough decided to stop it for a few weeks. Six weeks later the flares are back and for a week I have been on hydroxychlor (plaquanil) for RA and this week my lung doc started me on a month of azrithromycin because the obstructed cough that improved while on another antibiotic is gradually getting worse an so the cycle goes. So, as far as the new RA flares, I am hopeful that the hydroxychlor will help and as for the obstructed cough and bouts of infection, I hope that the inclusion of spriva and a month of azrithromycin will heal my lungs. Just wondering if there are those reading these post with my same problems or suggestions for me. Hope this is readible as my finger are giving me lots of pain right now.

Hello: welcome to this site. You are right, this site has great members who offer a lot of insights and support.

Yes, your post is readable. I'm sorry your fingers are hurting. I hope you get some relief soon.

I was diagnosed with RA almost an year back. My hands swell up too many times. I'm also on methotrexate and plaquenil - they say these medicines take some time to work so I'm hopeful. Take care!

Thank you Indu. Hoping for the best. My little finger is doing something different after I picked up pine cones with a reach-and-grab-it hand tool for about 45 minutes. My swollen fingers usually will bend, but this little one, I cannot bend it. It is swollen some, but I have to use my other hand to bend it, and oh how it hurts to to that. After 5 days of this, I'm wondering if that will go away or if I should see an orthopedist.

Hope that finger of yours feels better than before? Keep us posted on how you are doing.

I'm not sure if it is a myth or maybe I imagine it...but I experience that when it rains a lot over here, most times my knuckles and hands swell up.

Sweet Basil. Sorry about the diagnosis...... I don't mean to get your hopes up but when I went on plaquenil, I was able to stop my asthma meds (Adair). I guess it helped that inflammation. My RA isn't horrible, so they have not put me on methotrexate yet. Maybe the methotrexate was reducing your immune system and causing the respiratory infections.

I hope your RA gets better soon. It takes the plaquenil up to a month to work.

Best of luck to you!.
