hi everyone.  I posted this topic on the lupus forum as well.  I don't have RA or LUPUS but possible fibromyalgia.  I was thinking today that I haven't had a cold or flu in a year.  I wondered (because I have always thought that I had lupus or ra even though all bloodwork is normal) that it is because my immune system is stimulated fighting my good cells so is also fighting the viruses and germs.  What do you guys think?  My son really hasn't been sick either except for a cough once in the last year that I never got but my husband had a really bad throat infection thing that I never got.....so anyway wondering if any of you guys have been sick in the last year.  I know that RA has to do with your immune system attacking healthy cells so I thought maybe people here could relate.  There were several people from the lupus forum that have also not had cold or flu in a year so or more.  Some of them are taking immunosupressive drugs or cortosterioids to....I don't know.  I see my rhuematologist on thursday and thought I would ask if he thought it was weird that I haven't been sick with cold or flu in a year and why that might be!

I've been sick twice this winter. The first was only noticable as a minor flare in my RA, most of the joints bothered a bit, but nothing I could not live with.
The second time it was just after my son came down with a nasty flu. He was very sick for 5 days and took another week to fully recover, I was real sick for 2 days and felt back to normal within a couple more, so the symptoms were less for me than a very healthy 12 y.o.

I've had the flu shot, currently on MTX inject. and Enbrel. I've really worried about getting sick since being diagnosed, but it was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Over the past 2 years I have stressed my immune system as much as anyone and it seems to behave. I've injured myself, gotten sick, and stressed my body continually while training. So far, so good, I don't even worry about it anymore.
Oh yeah, and I drink the occasional adult beverage and I still have a liver nono

healthy again ... Craig

It is interesting. I wrote Erin about it and she said it all has to do with your whiteblood cell count. So it's probably a good thing. I will bring it up with rhuematologist thursday. Hope everyone has a good week!

I typically get sinus infections twice a year. When I first started Enbrel I had a few doozies! I couldn't tell you the last time I got the flu, I generally would get a good cold around Thanksgiving. Early last year, when they had the flu shot shortage (I don't get flu shots), I asked for and received a pneumonia shot. I promptly got a humdinger of a sinus infection (coincidence I'm sure), but I have not been sick one time since the sinus infection. I didn't get my 'springtime' sinus infection, I did not get a cold at all this past Thanksgiving (it's my tradition!) and I still haven't gotten sick. This with everyone at work being sick over and over. Come to think of it, my husband didn't get sick either.

I'm on Enbrel and MTX injections...something seems to be working! My liver is fine as well - I do drink on those rare occasions!

I'm curious what your doctor would say. Good luck!

That's an intersting theory, I say, don't look a gift horse in the mouth and just accept the fact you've stayed healthy!

I have a bad immune system and have been sick a lot! I used to be on Remicade, but have been off for a year almost. I'm still getting sick rather easily and just had a doozy of the flu in January, but it affected my household (of course, I got it the worst.)

A doctor once told me, some people have arthritis, some people have an auto-immune disorder with/from their arthritis. Though, arthritis IS considered an autoimmune disorder, he was saying that some people just have the problem with their joints, they flare, they get attacked, they deal with a lot of pain. Other people have the whole kit and kaboodle - their body is attacking not only their joints, but their whole body and immune system.

Let us know what the doctor says.

that's a good point to remember. arthritis in general is not an autoimmune disease. RA is an AI disease. osteo arthritis becomes inevitable w/ age/usage/injury and is benign unless of course the OA gets to the point where you knee TKR.
w/ RA like Lupus as well...it is systemic and more than just the joints are involved.

i agree...it's a good thing to be HAPPY about not catching colds!
Active, Severe RA. Crohns Disease. Chiari Malformation & Right Brain venous anomoly. AS. Emphysema. Rheumatic Lung. MVP and Tricuspid prolapse. Had Lymes disease for 10 years.
Meds: Humira 40mg every 4 days; pred; Pentasa; Imuran; dilaudid; diazepam; Avinza 30mg; MiraLax & too many others.
