I have been recently diagnosed with RA. Ive taken prednisone, arthrotec, indocin, methotrexate, and now ive been given a script for enbrel. I am a nurse at a local hospital and on my feet nonstop. I really need some advice on what meds work, side effects, etc. If anyone could reply I would be greatly appreciative.

Welcome to the forum, ShannyZ.  I haven't taken the drugs that you've been prescribed, but I am getting ready to try Enbrel too.  I've recently taken Humira (for 3 months) with no discernable effects at all.  I was terrified of the potential side effects, but I can honestly say that I experienced none.  I start Enbrel today.  In the meantime, for pain relief, I'm taking ultracet, as I cannot tolerate any of the NSAIDS.  Good luck with your Enbrel.  A lot of people have told me that Enbrel has done tremendous good in their lives.

Hey Shannyz! Like elcamino said, welcome to Healing Well. I have been on prednisone and indocin too, but not for anything arthritis related. I have take a whole slew of meds for my arthritis, but the only think that help me get back to about 95% of the old me, was the Enbrel. There are a few of us out here, that it has worked rather well for. Have you had your first injection yet? Are you still on the MTX too? Hang in there and let us know how you are doing! Duck

welcome ShannyZ,

well, i think the best thing you can hear from me is that i was working and in school working on a Med/Surg unit (in nursing as well) for over a year and a half while on Enbrel and prednisone.
i didn't catch a thing! which is reassuring for anyone working with the sick while on TNF meds.  i was very careful & BIG TIME handwashing, made sure i got a lot of sleep and i managed to finish up the year.
the Enbrel made a big difference in my lower back pain from AS, and the joint pain from RA.  but after that year on it...i sort of plataeud and got worse (then again, the RA i have was very out of control and went untreated for a long time).

i can not wait to get well enough to work again. i never thought i would say,"i miss the smell of iodine in the morning".
when do you start?
i truly wish you well & i understand completely where you're coming from.
the best to you!

ps....how many days can you work now? are you per diem?  is the RA really interfering with your performance @ work? ( i had to crawl home in tears towards the end) standing and my legs/knees were the issues that effected me most while at the hospital.

sincerely,
erin

I will start Enbrel on Monday. I work perdiem 3 days a week, 1 12 hr shift and 2 8s. I used to do 3 12s but my body couldnt keep up. I dont think RA interferes with my performance as a nurse, but I just tire alot easier it seems. I feel like Im a 60 yr old woman, if that makes any sense. Lately I have thought about all natural herbal remedies for RA, do you have any suggestions about this, or have you ever tried them? Thank you for your response

Hey Shannyz,

I believe that Omega Fish oils can only help with inflammatory disease. I take them...just so I can say I have done everything in my capabilities!LOL. Other than that SAM-E I was on & I don't think that hurt neither.
I think the faster one is diagnosed and treated that herbal/supplements will work best.
Mine is years gone untreated, so I take some supplements like the oils for hope so to speak.

I'm not the best to put any input on herbs or anything; but if I could afford it I would definitely give homeopathy and acupuncture a go. That is, as an adjunct to medical treatment.

Yeah, you've got it right...you feel decades older than yourself! It was my legs that did me in. That & nearly dropped a man while sliding him over in bed. (wrists gave out). And it doesn't look too good when you've got a patient on the floor does it?
Do be aggressive! I truly hope the Enbrel does you a world of good.
Quite a few folks here use herbal supplements more than I...so shouldn't be long till someone posts about success with certain things.
I hope to work per diem at least 2 or 3 days come next year.
Take care.

hi & welcome shanny z.
all our medicines have side effects.  i'm now taking methotrexate & prednisone. did not take enbrel yet because i can still manage & afraid of the side effects & it'sust a temporary cure but i think the best cure to us is acceptance that we have RA & regular physical therapy sessions.

i'm in sales & i'm doing a lot of fieldwork. my left knee is really hurting but i just do more of physical therapy to prevent damage of the joints while still early. stretching of the affected joints while you still can would be great to avoid stiffness & fused joints.
