I am 38 years old in the military am fit and have been experiencing an audible noise from my right knee. It fells like it's locking and makes a loud crack when I bend and straighten it. The locking feels like it's coming from the outside of the knee. I have no problem walking short distances but running is out of the question along with stairs. I have seen a Doctor and had x-rays but nothing wrong was found. It has been two weeks now and the locking is getting worse more so as the day goes on and with exercise.

Cheers,
Brad.

Hi Brad and welcome to healing well.. Sorry you are having problems with your knee... When did it start? Are you on any type of meds for it? Have you seen a specialist? I am in the military too, and when I first started experiencing problems, even with x-rays and bone scans, my pain was dismissed as one thing or another... finally I got referred to a specialist and it was found out that I indeed had arthritis. What branch of service are you in? Good luck to you and keep us posted - Duck

Hi, new to this site. about four years ago or more had problems w/ my knees cracking and popping. I continued on and X-rays showed nothing. Finally in May2005 I could no longer work my job I had for 24yrs. in the airlines. Went to a dr. had an Mri and arthroscopic surgery, now i need a TKR but tell me I'm too young. No meds help except Mobic and it makes me sick for days. I hope you get the right help, and a sympathetic doctor. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Diane, I too had to have a TKR. I had my right knee done in 2000, I was only 48. My orhto dr. at the time, didn't want to do it before I turned 50, but like I told him, "As fast as they are making improvements, by the time I should or would need another one. You will have it almost down to outpatient surgery." That was Oct. of 2000. This past Nov. (2005) I had to have the left knee replaced. My new ortho dr. said that there wasn't even any need in scoping it, 'cause it would have to be replaced sooner or later. Well, after long thought and llooking at our calendars, I decided on Nov. that way I was in really good recory shape by Feb. I needed to be able to go to the Disabled AMerican Veterans' Convention. I made it.

This TKR was a lot easier than the first one. I don't know why, but it was. I guess maybe, becasue I knew what to expect. One difference was that the anth. decided that doing a spinal would be better for my lungs. It was better all over for me. I woke up in surgery with them wrapping my leg up. I didn't stop talking all the way back to my room. The spinal was the way to go. Also, my otrho dr. didn't make as long of an incision. That made having to make those muscles move again a lot easier.

I wish you well, but if you are in a lot of pain I would pressure your dr. to replace it. I wore a brace for over a year before they did the first knee. Also, doing as much physical therapy both before and after the surgery is a key element in your recovery. I should have done more PT but I didn't. So I am almost fully recovered, but I have not been doing all that I should have after the surgery. Once you get home you get lazy. That is why I kept up with the outpatient for about 2 - 2 1/2 months. Good luck.

Here is a list of my meds. I keep trying to decrease or eliminate some but then I get sick again.

thank you for all your information about TKR. I am very scared about all of this. The sad part is my dr. I do not feel comfortable. I am going to my primary to get a new referral for orthopaedic surgeon, one w/ compassion. Since the arthroscopic surgery my knees are worse than ever . My job does not allow lite duty and so I'm frustrated looking for a new job, no one wants to hire u w/ a cane or crutches, and my employer says if I do go find another job they will fire me. FRUSTRATION AND DEPRESSION SETTING IN THIS WEEK after being off work 1 yr to the day.

You need to see a specialist - maybe an orthopedic like you (or someone) suggested - and get an MRI. X-rays are not good enough for certain problems. My husband had ptoblems with his knee locking a few years ago - the pain when his knee locked was awful! An MRI showed torn cartlidge. He had it taken care of via orthoscopic (sp?) surgery and it no longer locks. Depending on how bad the tear is, depends on how much cartlidge they remove. If you are lucky, and the tear isn't too bad, they can sometimes fix it - but there is no guaruntee. It is amazing how small of a tear can cause a lot of pain, but the less cartlidge they remove, the better.  There are a few different types of knee problems, hopefully, yours can be easily fixed.

Unfortunately, knees are not very forgiving once they have problems like this, and you will always have to treat them with more care from now on even after surgery.

Sorry if I repeated advice - it's late, I scanned this thread.

Good luck.**

Thank you for all the advice. I have been going to an orthapaedic specialist for one year now. It's time for a new one. I go to my primary for a a new referral today. The one I have has drained my knee after surgery 6 times in a row and the swelling has finally gone down. Between the synvisc shots and draining every week for six weeks I was going crazy. Told i need a TKR but am too young right now. Well I'm 47 and aint getting any younger. I do need a Dr. willing to do a TKR so I can get on with my life.
I use a cane and or crutches my other leg is starting to really bother me. Thank you for all your support. Diane

One drug MOBIC, ESP FOR OSTEO-ARTHRITIS HELPS WITH MY BETTER LEG. mY RIGHT KNEE , I was told after arthroscopic surgery that my kneecap was riddled. That 2 of 3 compartments on my right knee were damaged and need a TKR. But dr. wasn't ready to do it. Given ultram, mobic,etc................nothing did help, so now I'm going to a new dr. I have been off work for a year and can't do a thing, not even drive. Deb, I hope u have better luck than I did. The key is to have a compassionate dr. who will listen to you. I'll pray for all of you cause God knows we need it. I have a big problem accepting all of this at my age. and possibly not being able to do the job I love. Take care, Diane

Diane good luck with finding a new doctor. I so know what all you are going through with your knee(s). My first knee surgeon specialized in sports medicine. He is at the MS Sports Medicine Clinic, in Jackson, MS. Maybe if you can find a sports meds ortho, they might be more willing to help you. I know the knee surgery is not what you want, and they don't like to do them before age 50, but like I said I had mine at 47/49. If I had to have another one done tomorrow, I would do it. It is very painful the recovery, but it is so worth the pain to be able to be able to walk again. The second surgery was at 52.

Here is a list of my meds. I keep trying to decrease or eliminate some but then I get sick again.

I have been to 6 ortho drs and none will do my k/r the last one was a sport dr he said that the arthtritis is so bad under the knee that what i have to have done they don't even do he said it was a very serious operation and they do well known sport teams the best in the state and the reason they won't do mine is they don't last that long 10 years they told me maybe longer if i don't do much like work again .DEB
