I knew all you girls couldn't resist ... and that is OK, this is not really boys only tongue

So, I have found over the past year that I'm getting more cramps in my legs, thighs and calves, sometimes while out riding, but often while just sitting around. I also get them in parts of my chest.
Painful cramps, my legs lock right up in an instant and I can't move them because the muscles are super tight.

This is a fairly new phenomenom for me, I'm riding more, I stretch out a bunch and I try to lift 2 times a week. I suspect the MTX, I also shoot-up Enbrel.
I also take a multi-vit, glucosamine sulfate and folic acid, for the most part, a pretty typical coctail for RA victims.

Anyone else have this sort of problem (different than gal cramps to be sure)? Any other supplements I should consider?

Craig, I've wanted to reply to your post all day but I knew if I did then you'd know I read your post!

I haven't experienced the cramping that  you're talking about.  Previously, before enbrel I would tend to get a lot of cramps in my calfs and feet.  I haven't had that problem for a while, though.  Don't know about mtx because I've never taken it.  I wouldn't doubt that mtx would be responsible for part of your cramps, though.

hi craig, yalinda here....male for the moment lol, i am also on mtx and have been having tons of potassium problems along with cramping... my md just phoned today and told me my repeat potassium was low again and i needed suppliments.  i told him i wanted to see him in person this week to get to the bottom of this because until i was on all the meds i never had this problem.... i dont not know if there is a correlation and i have been doing research on line today to try and find it with no real success.  my hand cramped the other day into an awkward position of my digits and i couldnot move them at all ....i kinda looked like spock giving the volcan sign for about 15 min.  hahahaha  anyway i am told not to mess with the potassium levels because it effects ur heart causing irregular heart beats and fibs..... i would look into this information with ur doctor and get a potassium level taken asap.  i was told to eat bananas and oranges, not juice , but oranges. of course check with the meds first and good luck  i go thursday evening and i will let u know any info i get.

Hiya Craig!  Figured you were calling us 'in' on this thread - ha ha!

I was going to suggest talkign to your doctor about taking potassium supplements like yalinda - but I would GO in for a check up, the fact you are having cramping in your chest - that would scare me being so close to your heart and all.

Take care!***

Ok Craig, no fair, you can't bait us like that and expect us NOT to read it! Hee hee hee! Ok, Yalinda and CaMama said it for me... call your doc... When was the last time you had your levels checked? I get cramps too, but in my feet and toes... and holy cow are they wicked bad... I just had some bloodwork down yesterday and I go back to see the rheumy on Thursday, so we'll see what happens... Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing!

Thanks ladies, I knew you all couldn't resist.
It is interesting to see that others have had similar issues with cramping. I do tend to sweat more, I think also a feature of the drugs. And since it is hotter and I'm riding harder, the problem is just exacerbated. I don't think potassium levels are part of the regular blood tests ... are they?
I see the Rhuematologist in a month, I will ask then.

BAIT! that is the word I was looking for last night, thanks Ducky! tongue

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only sweaty one - though, my problem stems from liver inflamming....though, mthx affects liver, so maybe it's the same! I hate it, either way.

Craig, I'd call the doc now to make sure he doesn't want to see you sooner. The all over body cramping just doesn't sound good.

Take it easy. ***

Craig, my man...I second that.  I do think electrolytes; mostly calcium and potassium (Ca and K+).  And yeah, the MTX screws with your RBCs and those suckers carry O2...so?  Maybe a combo of both. The Ca & K+ would cause the lower leg cramping and also muscle spasms. And anything having to do with low RBCs would and could cause angina like chest pain/cramping

Electrolytes and all aren't usually in a routine CBC (just maybe 1 or 2).  The doc will check off the serum electolytes panel box and you'll get the whole shabang. Worth the while definitely. And getting your current Hemoglobin and Hematocrit (these are in a CBC) would be good as well. Just to keep an eyeball on anemia.

How's your cholesterol?

Ride on! Stay hydrated!

Peace,

erin

I too have the muscle cramps. I am a GURL, too couldn't risist reading either!!!!

I thought it was the zocor, and I am still not totally convinced it wasn't, but I was also put on a new hormone, estradiol. I went off it and the zocor at the same time. But I took one dose of the hormore and here came the cramps again.  I have taken 2 doses of the new chleostrol (sp) meds mevacor and so far it has not caused any of the cramps.  So, I am at an impass and don't know what medicine is casuing these God fearing cramps.  They parlalize (sp) me into whatever position I am in at the time the cramp hits.  My heart goes out to you and any others having these cramps. :-)

Erin,
I try to make sure I eat and drink enough, and often throw in Gatorade or salty snacks. My cholestral is not very good, in fact it is pretty bad. But I eat pretty well and exercise a bunch, and I don't want to be on the Lipitor any longer, considering the other meds.
I'm not sure what they are looking at with my regular blood tests, I know it includes liver function and hemocrit. Both have been good thus far.

I take a multi-vitamin and glucosime sulfate tablet everyday. I suspect a defficieny(sp?) as well. I think it is probably made worse by how much exercise I get (I am riding 5 days a week, 2-3 hours each on average) and the drugs I shoot up on a regular basis.

It is interesting to hear that others have noticed similar issues, with this and with what you all (gals) would call, glowing ... I call sweating.

well I gotta go ride ... Craig

I call it glistenin' like a pig!

Maybe it's just a fluke? You're riding & training hard. Joe trains for marathons; has no health problems, 52, and on his weeks where he ups his mileage...cramps galore.
Isn't it harder to ride or run when the temperature rises too?
Been reading in "Runner's World" now people's complaints of this sort of issue with unusual muscle fatigue/cramps/etc...
But you've been in the game a long time Craig, so you know what's whacky with your bod.
I do know however that Lipitor DOES cause myalgias, muscle cramps, and sometimes serious muscle conditions {I'm sure this is posted all over the bottle}.

Never glowing...always glistening,
erin

I am trying to figure out a way to get some exercise without breaking another bone. I was on my feet from Thurs. - Sun at a DAV State Convention.  I tried to rest as much as possible before the convention, but you know how that goes.
Anyway, hubby has been riding a 2 wheeled bike. I have a 2 wheeled bike that was mine when I was a child. It is over 40 years old and in excellent condtion. BUT I am afraind to ride it for fear of falling and breaking more bones.  They don't make adult training wheels for my size. So, I am putting a question out there if anyone knows of anyone who might have an adult tricycle for sale. I have checked Ebay and I just can't do the $200.00 + price right now.  So, if anyone knows of where I can post an add in a newspaper looking for one, I would greatly appreciate it. I live in Meridian. MS. We would drive up to 250 miles to pick one up or pay shipping on getting one shipped. :-)

I have a follow up appt. with the Prtho dr. tomorrow. I am afraidn I have fractured my right foot this time. Same symprtoms, so I am back on the walker.  I know I over done it, but like I say someitmes the [physical pain is worth tthe emotional gain.  I guess that should be my saying.

Thanks guys for listening.  I wish all of you out there freedom from pain. :-)

JBrat,
I wish I could help you out, since I think bikes are the best things ever invented, but I just don't have any info. on Tri's.

I don't know how prone to breaking bones you are, but a 2 wheeled bike is pretty easy to ride if you have a bike path of similar roadway (meaning minimal traffic).

good luck ... Craig

Craig, Thanks. I am very prone to broken bones I now have two fractured feet. One from early April and the other from this past weekend. I have been on steroids for over 4 years and I have osteorporis (sP) pretty bad from that.  I have a two whelder, but my balance is off. I just had my second knee replaced in Nov. so I am still unsteady on a bike.

I do appreciate your information.  Thanks, J :-)

UPDATE:  The new medicine for my chloestrol did it to me too. Severe legs cramps in the middle of the night. Now I am off another pill!! YEAH!!! :-)   But I still have high cholestrol.  He did add another fluid pill. So far it has not done much.  I have got to get some of this recent weight gain off!!!! redface

I am scheduled for a abdominal cat scan tomorrow morning. To rule out anything but adhesions for my stomach pain.  I form keloids really bad. I think from all of my surgeries I have had only 2 has not formed a hugh scar. When the scar is on the outside it is like that on the inside, I was told.  So I really look ugly fro all views. eyes

Jbrat,

I don't think you look ugly from ANY view.

Yeah, keloids are a little irky! tongue They're thick & pretty darn hard to miss...but some people are just made to scar that way. The way I scar isn't pretty neither.  Big BRIGHT RED SCARS and some actual indent way in...so they look like battle wounds.  Then again...we're in combat right?

That's right!  The statin medications for cholesterol, although they DO worlds of good not only by helping cholesterol but also detering several diseases...one has to be cautious of this screwy muscle thing.  It's rare, but it does happen.

I'm a die-hard supporter of GARLIC! :-) Have you tried using it as a adjunct to help cholesterol levels get down?    {{get down... get down! yeah yeah get down!}}} LOL.

I would think that the water pill would mostly help any blood pressure problems you may be having...not really having anything to do with cholesterol levels.

Is any weight coming off?  A lot of fluid build up?  Can you achieve a 1 to 2 pound loss per week?  Weight is hard I know.  And it works both ways. Those that can't gain and those who can't lose...we both get the same lectures by docs. nono   tongue

I do wish you well with your CT scan in the morning.  In my prayers.

Sincerely,

erin

Erin, Thanks.  How and where do you get the garlic to take?  I have read about it, but never tired it. I do like to cook with garlic yeah .I also read that it ws good for fleas for your pets.

Since I am on here I have another question to the forum users.  Has anyone had an dealings with ringworm??? confused    about 18 months ago I got a severe case of it and it got in to my system. It took forever to heal. I looked like a leper.  Anyway I finally healed but I have kept a sore in my scalp. Now it looks like I have ringworm again on my chest and a spot on my back. I only have 2 spots this time, plus the sore in my head, but I am not sure if I have ringworm again or not.  I asked a vet can  a person become a carrier of ringworm and it stay dormant and then flare back up. He said he didn't know. But I am treating the 2 spots like ringworm just in case. Dog and cat are fine, hubby too, just me.  I just wanted to throw that out there to see if anyone can help me.

Thanks to all the forum users and moderators. This forum has been a big help to me. :-)
