I was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 32 I am now 42 years old. After being on Fosmax for 4 years doc changed it over to Actonel. I use 4800mg of calcium supplements a day along with 7200 units of Vit. D a day. Now the doctor added Omega 3 Fish oil at 2400 units a day and Vit. E 1200 units a day. At this point, I started having problems swallowing semi-solid and solid foods. Stated this to the doctor and he discontinued the Actonel stating this being a side effect of the drug, this aphasia of the esophagus. So now I am no longer on any drug for the osteoporosis other than all these vitamins. I am worried my osteoporosis will get worse, what is to stop that from happening? Has anyone else had this problem with the osteoporosis medications? IF so, what has been your results, what have you and your doctors done to increase the bone density? I am worried now. confused

Hi Trish.  I second yalinda's welcome.  I have not previously replied to your post because I don't have Osteoporosis, nor do I really know much about it.  I think you ask some very good questions, though.  Have you asked your doctor what the ramifications are for not taking the medications?  I know that for all of these AI type diseases (osteoporosis is not an AI disease, is it?), it's always a careful balancing act between receiving tx and remaining healthy.  Tx can be worse than the disease.  I have heard that some forms of osteopososis are not progressive, but I don't know if this is true.  Best of luck in seeking your answers--again, I think your doctor is the best source.

thank you for replying. If I posted this in the wrong place (forum) and I'm sure I did, I apologize being new here I am lost about where to find certain threads, I emailed a monitor and she was very kind and understanding. Thank you Sherry. :-)

As for the OA - just an update, I looked on the FDA website and found Actonel and Fosmax manufactures both under Class Action Lawsuits. After reading the problems, side effects and long term disabilities from the lawyer and FDA site that these two drugs caused (and to more than the average "mass") I am glad I am no longer taking it.

As I find more out on this and what my long term effects with my throat will be, I will post again as to update. I appreciate this site, it lets everyone read what others are going through as well as giving useful information.

Thanks again and hope all have a great day :-)

Trish
