This is going to sound really dumb, but it's driving me batty, so here goes!!! tongue

I've been having a problem with ringing in my ears for almost the past year. It's not all the time - somedays it's louder than others. Somedays not at all. I've mentioned it to my Rheumy and he doesn't think it's the Remicade or the MTX since I didn't experience this with the Enbrel & MTX.

In the past year (since just before my crohn's diagnosis actually), I went from being a belly sleeper (to painful to sleep on my belly) to a back/side sleeper. I do have AS involvement in my neck and I'm finding on many mornings, I wake up with ringing ears and a "crick" in my neck. Now I'm wondering if I need a new pillow. I'm wondering if the pillow I currently have is too soft and could possibly be irritating my neck which in turn is irritating something higher to make my ears ring. (did that make sense? LoL).

I have a referral pending for an ear, nose & throat doctor, but feel that's a bit much. Anyway, I was wondering and thought I'd run it by you'all!

Seriously though - in changing sleeping positions, do you need to change pillows as well? It's hard enough to get a decent nights sleep with AS & RA, but this crick in the neck and ringing ears is nuts. Thanks!

Hey there! No, you don't sound dumb at all.. in fact your story sounds very familiar.. I have a cousin with AS and Crohn's and he had to stop sleeping on his stomach too 'cause of the Crohn's, but mysteriously, as he went to sleeping on his back, he got ringing in his ears as well. His rheumy dismissed it, but he got one of those temperpedic (sp?) pillows, and he hasn't had any problems. He said that the pillow he was using, he had for a long time and it was a down pillow.. His rheumy said it was "coincidence" but now that you bring this up, I don't think it is.. He never got seen by an ENT, so I don't know what the correlation is.. but sounds like there is something there... I'll call him tonight and see if he's had anymore problems, and will let you know...

When do you go to see the ENT? Hang in there and keep us posted..

HI,

I get ringing in my ears, though I don't know why & mine doesnt correspond with how I sleep and it  happens during the day, too. HOwever, I have had neck & shoulder pains with spasms and found a cervical pillow gave me alot of relief. Now I cannot sleep without it. I use while sleeping on my back and my sides. The one I have is one of those horseshoe shaped ones, but there are many different kinds on the market. It helps keep my spine straight while sleeping, rather than my head being lower or higher than the rest of me.

Thanks for making me feel better! I really debated on whether to post or not, but it is driving me nuts. I'm going pillow shopping today - guess I'm going to have to find one for back/side sleepers.

Ducky, I'd be interested to hear how your cousin is doing and how he feels about this. Coincidence my eyeballs!! Must be something there. I don't have the appointment yet - just got the referral approval last week. I figure I'll see him in the next few weeks, but frankly think it's a waste of time. There has to be an easier explanation w/answer out there. Ah well.

Baybreeze, I'll look at those pillows as well - what a great idea. Thank you.

I'll let you guys know how it goes -- pillow shopping - cracks me up! LoL

Enjoy your Sunday!

Hey Erin - I'm making my appointment with the ENT today! No, I don't think I have a pinched nerve (I'd know it, I'm sure!). We'll see what he says. Monday ringing, yesterday none, today ringing -- still need to get a new pillow!!! Gotta love it..

Well, this is an absolute first with regards to referrals and appointments! I'm getting a hearing test tomorrow morning at 8:45, followed by an actual appointment with the ENT. WOW! Will let you know how it goes...I still think it has to do either with the Remicade or the change in sleep positions/pillow issue. Fingers crossed!!!
