Hi there,

I am not sure if what I have is arthritis and I know I can only know for sure by visiting a doctor, but your feedback will help my decision.

about 2 months ago I had pain/discomfort in my left thumb where it meets my hand.  It was difficult to type and I would call the pain more like a stiff weakness feeling.  It went away after a day.

Last week I had the thumb pain in both of my hands, at the base and the next joint up for 2 days.  Again, more like a weak/tight feeling that lasted through out the day.

2 days ago both my hands, thumbs and wrist feel this weird tight/weak feeling that on a pain scale would be a 3 out of 10, not excrutiating.  I have noticed some involuntary movement of my fingers/thumb and I would say the discomfort lies mostly in joint areas but the tops of my hands feel weak as well. It almost feels like my fingers want to go towards my hand, its a really weird sensation.

I am 32 years old, female, good health except for fatigue.  I have always been a tired/stressed person.  I have also been twitching in my eyes, getting toe cramps and having twitching in other parts of my body but I have always attributed that to my stressful nature.

I have no idea if my joints are swollen as I never really looked at mine before.  I can say that my index and middle finger joints where they meet my hand are at least twice as large as my ring finger/pinky joint...but that may be totally normal.

Does this sound like arthritis?

Thanks

Hey there snackcakegirl.. welcome to the forum.. we are so happy to have you... Hhmm.. it does sound a bit like arthritis.. but what about Carpal Tunnel? My mom had that, and her hands used to feel that way too... I have Psoriatic Arthritis, among other places,it does affect my hands/fingers/wrists.. the pain/sensations sound similiar to what you describe.. but my fingers will swell and turn red and hot as well.. do you notice any heat coming from your joints or redness? Hang in there.. take good care..

The joints that meet my hands are red but I am not sure if it is because they are cold/dry or if it is due to inflammation.  My index and middle finger joints are more than double the size of my ring and pinky finger.  Is that normal?

Thanks for the reply!

Hi,

It could be arthritis, but my first thought was also possibly carpal tunnel syndrome. It's common in people who type alot, lift alot or do alot of data entry type work. As for your finger joints, my own index & middle finger joints are much larger than the other fingers also, so it may be normal. Does the shape of all the joints appear the same? Or do the index & middle finger joints seem to look mishappen or have bony protusions anywhere? Do you get swelling in the joint areas?

I personally get pains and spasms in both hands, sometimes it feels localized to the joints (feels like a deep toothache right in the joint area), sometimes I think it's my muscles, or tendons. Sometimes it seems hard to tell in the hands. I do get alot of stiffness where I cant open my hands to put them flat, then again, that could also be due to the muscles & tendons. I also get painful spasms where my hands go into a cup shape and my thumbs press into my palms. But then again, I get spasms in other areas of my body as well. I also have lupus, OA in some other joints, and spondylosis.

snackcakegirl, now thazt is a name i could live with lol! esp if it has tons of frosting lol
on a more serious note being that your pain is symetrical and at the proximal finger joints u just might have the begining onset of an autoimmune arthritis like RA but there are many different "things" that can mimic those symptoms. for me it started in my wrists (well actually my eyes) and moved to fingers toes etc etc. in my situation my pcp gave me a dose of prednisone and it helped greatly so he then referred me to a rhuematologist who completed a series of blood work and xrays that confirmed a diagnosis of RA. hopefully u will have a good pcp who will listen to your symptoms and refer u to an appropriate specialist if one is needed. dont give up as many here have gone on scavenger hunts trying to get a dx and tx. good luck yalinda
