Technically it is not arthritis but a muscle and tendon problem.  Anybody with any advice?

Hey Joan, shin splints.. yuck... I had them in basic training... here are some things you can do:

Rest your legs (shins)
Ice your shins (10-15 minutes 4 times a day)
Take some motrin for the swelling
Make sure you have the proper shoes... I know there is a shoe store here that does Gait Analysis, to find out if your feet pronate or not.. a lot of times people wear the wrong shoes and it causes them shin splints.. They get the "perfect" pair, and they are good to go...
Also consider getting arch supports (OTC inserts are good or if your doc can make a set of orthotics for you that would be your best bet)

Let us know how you are doing..

Hi duckie...good to hear from you again. You are very funny sometimes on the good moaning board and I get a kick from it. I do wear orthotics already and docs have oked shoes. I am taking alleve (it works for me) but I should ice my shins. Have you heard of anybody trying the ace bandage type thing on their legs? I am going to ice my shins right after I get off the computer.

Thanks for the advice.

Hey there Joan... :) Glad you get a kick out of my posts.. I get in silly moods sometimes.. :) Humor is a wonderful drug.. anyhoo - yes, ace bandages work wonderful too.. lots of sports therapists will wrap their patients with ace bandages like that too to help them.. good idea... what have you been doing to get the shin splints? Have you been jogging on hard pavement?
