Hey Joan, shin splints.. yuck... I had them in basic training... here are some things you can do:
Rest your legs (shins)
Ice your shins (10-15 minutes 4 times a day)
Take some motrin for the swelling
Make sure you have the proper shoes... I know there is a shoe store here that does Gait Analysis, to find out if your feet pronate or not.. a lot of times people wear the wrong shoes and it causes them shin splints.. They get the "perfect" pair, and they are good to go...
Also consider getting arch supports (OTC inserts are good or if your doc can make a set of orthotics for you that would be your best bet)
