Hey everyone! Well I think my next appointment is going to be adding meds or changing meds, what do you think? I'm on 20mg pred. and MTX now. Hands and knuckles still swelling and stiff, feet too in the mornings. So any idea where they go from here? If i do absolutly anything with my hands that i don't do on a regular basis, i get really swollen and sore. No big flares since i started the meds though. Thank God! But this swelling is making it hard to type all day at work, tie my shoes, and zip zippers. I really don't want to go on higher Pred. What is usually the next step from where i'm at? Kibbles eyes

Hi Ducky,Well I read that the swelling and stiffning and soreness is damage happening to the joints,so I don't want that happening. But my God I just got diagnosed 2 months ago or so, and here I am having to add new meds, finding the ones I'm on aren't doing it for me. So do we have to be on this big ol' mix of drugs to have it calm down? Or do they take us off one to try another? If you or someone out there knows, I'd appreciate hearing some input yeah Kibbles

You may need to go to a biologic like Enbrel/Humira/Remicade.. etc.. when I first got diagnosed, I was immediately put on Enbrel.. and all the pain and swelling and stiffness went away, til recently.. when is your next appt? You may not have found the right medication "cocktail" that works for you... hang in there, you'll find it.. it may take a while, but you'll get there..

Hi Kibbles......I was on several different combinations before I started the Enbrel. I am still on MTX and my doctor said that He can't reduce it too far. So i guess I will be on this for as long as it works. At this point I don't know if it is working. Only time will tell if the joint damage is progressing. It took about a year of fishing around for a drug combo to get good relief. I hope you find some help soon.

Thanks Diva, It's not horible at this point, but then again I try to take it pretty easy on the hands. But i want to be able to live normally ya know. I need to paint my kitchen and bed room ceiling, but i pretty much know that i will be in bad shape by the time I'm done, but it's gotta get done. Thats sad. Maybe it won't be so bad,and the hand RA will behave. Take care ..Kibbby

Hi Joy,

Ya know...the steroids can be causing the hand swelling! Swelling is a byproduct of prednisone...so what you are seeing may not absolutely be from RA, it could be from the pred.
MTX plus an Enbrel or Humira med may make a world of difference.

Best wishes @ your appointment.

Hey ya'll,
Nah..it's not like my hands are just puffy all the time or anything. It's when i try to do stuff, like caulk along some corners in the kitchen, open a jar thats too tight. Reach over my head doing a repetative motion,or like typing all day at work. Then my hands , wrists and fingers get very sore and swell up,and my shoulder will get stiff. I can't do my normal stuff or i make myself hurt. It's hard to get use to that. I'm not use to babying myself. I went and cleaned my bro's kitchen one day,and by that evening two of my fingers got very stiff and swollen and very sore to bend. It took 2 days to go down to where they were just a little sore. So I guess what I am looking for is being normal again. Will that happen? Will the right med. cocktail make it so I don't hurt with everything I do? Or does this whole thing just get worse? Think i may be having a little pity party for myself here. I'm sorry. It's just discouraging. Take care, Kibby
