Hi everyone. Let me just start by moanin' I feel like heck today. Which, consequently, wasn't bad timing as I saw my rheumy this morning. He's increasing the mtx (twice what I take now), and he's putting me on tramadol, as opposed to ultracet (what I've been taking). He said tramadol is stronger, but is not an addictive narcotic--I do not want to take narcotics unless I absolutely have so much pain I can't function (not there yet). He also told me to start splinting my wrists at night with some old carpal tunnel splints I have lying around.

I'm so tired, but I have so much I have to get done. I had 3 doctor appointments this week (actually 2, with one scheduled u/s), so I can't take off any more time at work, and there's just not enough hours in the day. Right now I just want to soak in the hottest water I can take, dose myself with ultracet (haven't filled the tramadol prescription yet) and watch tv. American idol is on tonight, but I am honestly disgusted with that show these days. IT's actually getting quite boring. House comes on later, though.

Bear, forgive me if I gave you the impression I live in the UK. I don't--I live in the DC area and work not terribly far from where you're traveling to. I have been to the UK, though. Went there for my honeymoon--with my husband of course. Met some really great people, and some weird ones too. Stayed at personal homes advertised as B&Bs. Overall, it was a great experience. Don't recall where Apsley is, though. We didn't make it to western England, but we did hit all four countries. In 3 weeks! Never again.

Hello and good moanin form the cave in downtown Apsley. To Yalinda and elcamino [[[[[[[[[[[[[mega bear hugs from cyberspace]]]]]]]]]]]]] and I hope mommy bear don't catch me doind that or I'll be for the big snip. Sorry to hear about your pain - I was wondering where mine had gotten to today. Caught the jet stream.
You won't have visited Apsley - downtown or anywhere else for that matter - el unless you went near a god forsaken place called hemel hempstead. Before the WWII there were 6 villages around what was a small market town in hertfordshire called Old Hemel. After the war there was a great need for new housing outside London to replace the houses lost to the bombs and they - there is always a they in  these things - decided it would be a friendly gesture if they filled in all that empty space between the villages and called it ma new town. Apsley was one of those villages and it still had a friendly -ish village feel about when we moved caves 14 years ago. At least we arestill on the edge and not in the middle. The bear's cave backs on to the railway line and on the other side of the tracks are FIELDS. But its still downtown Apsley to me. Whay did we move there you might ask? To be near the bear cubs nanny so he could get the best childcare when mommy bear went back to work. They forgot about nanny bear in the goldilocks story.
End of social geograpphy lesson.
Your honeymoon sounds like my first gtrip stateside in 87 when I thought I woulld visit seattle and got on the bus - in New York!!!!! Well nobody told me it was THAT FAR did they. Sleepless going to Seattle wasn't in it. How stupid can one person get? Stupid enough to stay for a weekend and get on the bus back again, , that's how stupid.
Met loads of interesting people though. yeah
I'm glad your family helped you out Yalinda cos it's all well and good to feed the nation but somebodies got to wash the dishes, you have two months now to prepare for the 4th adn then a long rest to thanksgiving. We don't really have days like that - sure we have mother's day and fathers day but thats just a box of chocolates and a bunch of flowers and thats it till next year. Shocking what?
There w ego I'm rambling on again.  Time to ramble on to the train and west to the coast where I'm meeting a group of volunteer organisers doing all kinds of good works in schools, doctors surgeries and the like. Diamonds every one.
Take it easy with the meds and I'm sure the side effects will ease off iin time Yal - ew have a saying here 'No gain without pain' but that was probably started by someone who was dead!
Stay well y'all.

Hey everyone,

Yalinda...I'm sorry to hear you are in pain, but glad you are starting the Enbrel!! Yikes needles....are they sub Q or IM? When we did IVF, I had to do both kind and I was such a wimp, it took forever, and even had to do Emla cream to numb the spot beforehand. I have a true fear of needles, so let me know how it goes for you, I am sure you will be fine :)

Elcamino...Is your MTX ,making you tired? I am on my second week of mine but only 10mg and it just feels as if I am wading through quick sand, but a lot of the pain is gone. Not to mention the bruising, do you have this? I agree it doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day, but try to slow down okay?

Everything is going okay here, still taking my MTX and plaquenil, it really makes me feel puney!! I have not been this run down in a very long time, but I have managed to find some relief from the awful hip pain I was experiencing.

Hi Momto3.

I haven't increased the mtx yet.  I take it on Friday, tomorrow, so I will be increasing it from 7.5 mg to 15 mg (a big jump, if you ask me).  If I'm tired, at least it will be the weekend.

I'm also prepared to up my folic acid.  I remember when I first started mtx at 7.5 mg, my body went through an initial adjustment period and I did develop a few mouth ulcers.  My rheumy told me yesterday that you can't take too much folic acid, so if I start getting mouth ulcers again with the 15 mg, I'll just double the folic acid too.

Hope everyone is doing better.  I'm still sore, but the tramadol I was switched too seems to be working a bit better than the ultracet.

Hope you're feeling better, El. Glad Yalin' had a great Momma's Day. Good to hear from The Bear again. Not much going on here. "Cept employees make me want to scream like a wild woman. Ugh! I'm going to have to light a fire under the old man and insist it's time to sell, sell, sell..... or else he'll be running the place by himself. Still detoxing from Effexor. Day #5 of nothing after cutting down dosage for a month. Still getting "brain zaps" and I can tell it was helping with pain. But it made me depressed. Go figure.
Need a nap before grandson's ball game. TTYL, Boo

G'moanin'.  Lost ball game by 1 run last night.  Kids were happy (they don't know come here from sick 'em).  They had fun and that's all that matters.

I don't have anything planned this weekend and that feels so good.  Sleep in tomorrow, sip coffee, read newspaper...  We've had so many wedding showers, weddings, funerals, etc.  Of course, hubby will have a roping to go to somewhere.  I may even go watch him this weekend.  It is hard for me to be a spectator.  I want to jump on a horse and say, "Yeehaw and Hi Ho Silver".  A trail ride would be a good thing for me, slow and easy, but my trail horse is 24 years old now and she's not feeling any better than I am.  Just like me, she has her good days and bad days.

Well. I hear hubby roaming the halls looking for me.  Gonna stear him back into bed.  Have a great weekend, Everyone.  Boo

G'moanin g'moanin - cept its not, it's evening and the bear has just arrived back in the cave in downtown Apsley from three days in a seaside cave in Exmouth devon. I wish you could post pictutres as well as words on this site as I took some great pictures.  Sorry to read eveerybody's been unwell of late - all I can report is my right hand has decided it ain't gonna work and resembles a claw. The mere suggeston
to mommy bear that a massage might be in order was greeted with a soudn unlike one I have heard this side of Jurassic Park. II was only loooking for shoulders and arm!!! I really do hope that Yal, el, ducky, erin boo and the rest are improved for the weekend and that the trail ride sounds a good idea - make mine a donkey please. I remember when I was a kid and we played cowboys and indians therer would always be arguments about who would be who and I always wanted to be the horse!!! A palomino to boot. Some say I was a strange child, I don't know why. Well aks yourself the question, how many horses got killed in the films? At least I got to stay on my feet in the games.
What's Pimlico? A racetrack? We get the US racing on satellite here but it takes me all my time to pick winners in the domestic racing. Do you have jumps racng over  there?
I read a wonderful description of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill by Hunter Thompson - I laughed til I cried. He's my favourite US writer adn I have lots of his books - not to everybodys taste mind. I'm also trying to get into Walt Whitman - another acquired taste I believe.
Does anybody outt there know Alexandria old town va? I stayed there 4 years ago for a week - fell in the potomac - don't ask why, iit's embarassing. Even today. Found a ggreat music bar the laughing lizard lounge -I'm hoping to revisit in july - but not the potomac. Not a good idea. No.
Who have the sabresgot this weekend Yal? Tthe bear cub has managed to download lots of hockey games from the web but thee seems to be little hockey going on and lots of wrestling doubling as ice dancing and waving at each other - you can just imagine them saying 'after you, do hurt your knuckles on my helmet' and the other guy resonding ' not at all chap, after you and do feel free to use this stick I found lying around". Or some such words. It makes great entertainment and every now and then they throw a puck on the ice for show. Great fun.
I sympathise with the dude who has a thing about needles - I avoid them like the plague and I don't nkow how I would cope if I wasa diabetic or had to self inject like Yalinda. I'd want the numbing cream all over mybody.
And as for the squirts, well we do dicuss and nform about some really sweet subjects here don't we. You'd never find the pd-ers talking about body functions n the same way but that's why I'm over here and not over there most of the time.
We can buy these amazing capsules n the pharmacy here that stop the squits withng half an hour but there again they then stop everything for days - one door closes etc
I've only ben home a couple of hours and I mis the sea already - I used to live in Devon and I still miss it 25 years on. Anybody out there live near the sea? It would appear that the bebar cub has gone vegetarian while I was away and now we all have dfferent meals time for the gruelI'll post back later and hey Ducky is there any way of posting seaside landscapes?
Take care and stay well people
Bear hugs to you all

Awesome Yalinda! Very proud of you!!!

Sorry I've been MIA again. Here's a rundown of my life the last 2 weeks: planning and stressing over son's 6th birthday bash the Tuesday before MOther's Day....rushing and stressing to get house back in livable/viewable order for company and hosting Mother's Day, not to mention sister coming in to stay with me that weekend (who just announced she is pregnant for the first time), the Friday before Mother's day, my newly 6-year-old son comes down with a heinous flu and is sick all weekend and off and on duing the week, I get a call out of the blue from somoeone I spoke to in January about a job opportunity - WOW, to boot it would be part-timish AND 100% telecommuting (perfert for my immuno-suppresed body), THEN yesterday I wake up unable to move - my son lovingly shared his flu with me.  I feel like one of those poor soles from Spiderman 2 on the Subway where as they fall out of the subway Spidey webs them and flings them to safety, only I missed the safety web. tongue   That, or I've been put in a giant dryer and every joint in my body hit one of those rims inside the machine.....<sigh> I thought I was doing better today, apparently, it was just the Motrin (I was able to stomach it today) talking....<sigh> I guess that's why my feet have been feeling like sausages all week, hurting like heck.

Thanks for letting me vent after not being here to support you all. I hope everyone starts feeling better as well. Erin....you and your play on words, are you SURE you meant toilet???? nono Because if you mean the OTHER pot....I'm feeling like I could use an RX dose for my pain! Ha ha!

Feel better all....I'm having a heard time typine letters right today...everythign messed up...you'd think I was on semthing! This is hoe messed up my brain's been thes last few weekes. I haven't been able to dial a phone number correctly in weeks either. <isgh> - I didn't correct this paragrahp just to show you owoh bad it is tonight! Ugh. Take care!*****

Poor CaMama, hang in there. We need you. Recoop time didn't used to take as long, huh? So many little things that have to get back to "normal" before the whole being follows suit. Rest is about all we can do and that comes at a premium with small children.
I have a choice today...I can watch hubby clean out stalls, removing "gumbo" and replacing it with newly purchased sand or go to Norman, Ok. with sis and shop. Hummmmm....let's see. Tough decision. Take care.

Hi and moanin to you all but particularly camama - flu is no joke. I peed me off when I heardpeople at work say they didn't  come in as they had a touch of flu - theydidn't they had a chill or a bad cold. Flu is a dfferent beast and I don't envy you. I hope that oyu still had your flowers and chocolates or whatever on THE DAY. Especially as you had cleaned the cave for the special day. Mommy bear is cleanng the cave manically while I am away as shesays that when II 'help' I just get iin the way but we have put the cave up for sale - we need a bigger cave as 81 year old mother in law bear is selling her cave and we are moving in together so mthat's it. I'll never find another thing in the new cave wherever it is. Anybody out there gto experience of moving n with mother n law? She is a lovely old bearess but that's lovely in terms of coming over every sunday and me putting ehr bets on every saturday but livng together? That's another ball game entirely but this is pay back time for all the child care she she put in when the bear cub was pre school - the best you can get believe me. As I aam hoping to retire in dec 08 and she has the constitution of a tortoise - have you seen how long those suckers live - I will have to spend long periods of time in her company in wall to wall soapland. They never mentioned that in the goldilocks stories either. Advice please? I've already hit in th idea of a shed type cave in the garden [yard] where i can escape to and watch satellite sport and rock music performances not mention the racing channel.
No matter what happens to me health wise I always said that mil bear should she ever get ill etc will never have to go into care and be looked after by others. That's no intended criticism of others who do - its each to their own out there and we don't ever know where our own stretching point is. I remember when caring for my own mother bear how desolate I felt when she became too ill for me to carry on and she went into hospital, I felt I had failed. I knew I hadn't but the feeling was different.
On a lighter note theree is a game called basketball on as II write Pheonix and a team called SA whoever they are. It resembles the gane I played at school only in as much as they rundown one end and then they all run down the other end and so on. The only difference I can see is that when we were at school I don't remembering putting the ballll through the hole too much. It more resembled a jogging contest. Never really sawthe point myself. Now golf, there's a waste of space if ever there was one and I used to plat the thing. "A good walk spoilt" is how Goerge Bernard Shaw once put it. Methinks he understated it.
Yalinda, how's it going with the jabs? How often do you have to take them? I don't know anything about rheumy meds otherr than anti inflamataries and painkillers. You deserve a bottle of Bolly for the courage to use yourself as a pin cushion. Maybe you could even mainline the Bolly?
Well it's typical spring weather here in downtown Apsley inas muchas its raining and windy. Time to hang the washing out dirty and throw soap powder at it - organic washing machine or what? As the cave is now on the market we can expect hoards of people traipsing through the cave but I shall be away in Manchester for the middle of the week so mommy bear will bear the brunt [sorry bout the pun] Have you ever seen a bear with a sore head? Stay well out of the way, light the blue touch paper and stand clear. I love her dearly but a Man's sense of the word 'tidy' just doesn't enter the register, we see with different eyes. Anyway its time to go watch the bear cub play cricket. Another game ew brits gave the world and excel at losing.
Bye for now and stay well but advice on the m-i-l front very welcome.

Bear, I don't have a mother in law living....but good luck with that. No matter how "lovely" someone is, it's a change of life in your house (oh, sorry - cave!) - especially since you have to find new dwellings to accomodate her.

Okay, I need HELP! I'd write this in a new thread, but I think everyone might read this faster than checking out new threads - upon the other ailments of this flu thing, my throat is KILLING ME!!!! It is a giant lump that not only kills to swallow, but is hurting my ear severely as well as my neck, jaw, and shoulder - which ultimately gives me a horrid headache! What gives? Hot drinks barely help. Cold drinks make it slightly worse. I did get some relief last night for about 2 hours after I had swallowed some Motrin, then added an icy hot patch on my neck and shoulder. It took 2 hours for the 2 of them to kick in together, but did eventually give me some relief. I thought after 2 days it would start getting better, but it has not yet....I really can't afford the time or money to go to urgent care/emergency room, especially if it'll go away. It doesn't feel like strep or anything, just a horrid lump on the right side of my throat. When my son was sick, he did wake up crying a couple of mornings saying his neck/throat were kiling him, but throughout the day he never said it continued to hurt and now he says it's gone.....I guess I need to wait it out, but I'm miserable and want to sleep more! ANY suggestions on getting relief?

Boo....gee....that IS a tough desicion, watching hubby clean out stalls or go out with sis....decisions, decisions. tongue ***

Hi camama, I take it strep means tonsilitis which usually needs antibiotics, yes? That's what I take if my throat gets lumpy with white spots - penicillin. I presume you have to get an MD's prescription for those? The bear's household swear by aspirin gargles for something like raging soreness - soluble asprin in water and gargle de gargle every hour at first. Ibuprofen helps get down the swelling and they are as cheap as woodchips over here as are the paracetamol for painkilling, but again I don't know about availability and cost in the US. We tend tospit out the gargle rather than swallow it [the bear's family that is] and ew take paracetamol for the pain. The combination of paras and ibuprofen usually starts to work after the first or second course.

If truth be told I too am having a crappy day myself mainly with referred pain from the hip. It can crop up anywhere from the middle back to the feet and I haave to be careful with the painkillers I take as too many really zomboid you/me. The only anti inflammatory that doctors hand out with any ease is diclofenac - either as voltarol or the stronger dose in arthrotec. Either way they muck yor innards up in time evetually. The next painkiller up the scale is morphine and I don't trust myself wth them really. Any suggestions on effective OA relief would be welcome - generic name please as proprietary brands often have different names over here. Arthrotec doesn't do very much for me that II can see but I suppose I would notce something if I stop taking them. Anybody any thoughts on stopping arthro to see what happens?

There. I've had my moan for the day but it may noot be the last.Mommy bear and the bear cub are due abck soon and I hae made a vegetarian lasagne for them but I'm noy very good at it yet lasagne was/is the type of pasta I never have been good with. All the rest s fine but am not keen [you can't put honey on a lasagne, well you can but.............]
have you ever seen waht congealed melted cheese and honey looks lke? YEEEEEUK!
Hey I won $120 on the gee gees today - three winners in doubles and trebles format that only cost the equivalent of $1 stake. Form a queue by the door ladies/gentlemen, the drinks are on me.

The bear family are back so I'll sign off now so from downtown Apsley so so long and I hope that camama 's pain eases
and oh yes, Boo, what is 'gumbo'? s it what I think it might be?
take care and stay well everybody, bear hugs all round.

scool  Camama! {{{{{{ HUGS }}}}}}}} you already probably know...but the sinuses, throat & ears are all connected; so an infection in 1 can easily & readily spread to the other parts. typicallly a throat infection goes straight quick to an ear.  inner or middle ear infections can take a toll on your neck too. that or a big swollen gland can cause a lot of pain.  the only real way to get to the bottom of that would be antibiotics, especially if the days are passing & it doesn't feel to be getting any better.
ya might score with just a phone call to your PCP, avoiding the appointment. worth a shot maybe...it's really nothing to call in an RX for an antibiotic unless of course the doc wants a culture.
in the meantime...lots of salt water gargles & LOADS OF GARLIC! i swear by garlic as an antibiotic.

aaaah, i finally made it to my honey's! :-) he hit a few races so far. yeah weee-hooo yeah
Bear...yep, PIMLICO is a beautiful race track in Maryland. and 132 years ago there was a horse named "PREAKNESS" & long story short these fellows over here decided that particular stakes race would be called  Preakness there on in. we're rooting for STREET SENSE this afternoon.  i think he'll take all 3 jewels...i do! a triple crown winner...i know it!
i live right by the New York Bay (and unfortuantely the Newark Bay as well) & also a thing called the Kill van Kull.  so yeah...i'm stranded in a penninsula.  but this is nothing like the really beautiful coasts down south NJ.  Cape May is great...the Atlantic really comes alive the further down NJ you go. oh, about arthrotec...(that worked so well for my RA pain...but caused a major bleeding problem. darnit) nsaids may not be strong enough for very bad pain, have you tried Darvocet? or propoxephene i think the generic name is?) Darvcoet N 100 it's also called. it has a tylenol plus an opioid additive, but it's not as strong as morphine.  i was on that for quite a few years until it stopped working...but now i have dilaudid 4mg that i really think need to be increased too.

rainy rainy day again. ok...off to go snuggle. :-)
p.s. doing better than yesterday, thank heavens.

What is paracetamol ?

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try the salt water gargle. I'm allergic to garlic, sadly.

It took about 2 hours, but the Motrin had finally kicked in and I actually got a couple of hours of rest this morning. I've been keeping meds in my body alternating xtra strength Tylenol (acetophetimine) and Motrin (Ibprofuin) and just downed 600 mg of Motrin in hopes to feel well enough to get some rest tonight.  If my throat is still this bad on Monday, I'll go to the doctors, but so far the meds are giving me enough relief to make it thru the day (hopefully tonight as well!) Unfortunately, the docs around here don't do ANYTHING w/o you coming in and paying a co-pay regardless of the situation.  And yeah, even with the relief, I can't touch my throat/neck, it hurts way too much.

Stay warm. Stay healthy everyone. One more day of rest before the new week begins. My daughter said they have only 21 more days of school or something like that. I wonder if I'll be able to enjoy their summer with them or will this job come thru and I will have to work through yet another summer and miss my kids?

This is the star ship enterprise with the captain bear at the helm welcoming you to a beautiful Sunday morng in downtown Apsley, I feel so much better this morning. yeah
Camama I do hope that you made it through the night without too much pain and that you can recover without recourse to the cash tilll doctor. I also agree with Erin about the power and the healng properties of garlic but you do of course have to weigh up the possibilities of everybody giving you the big bodyswerve whenever you get within kssing distance.
Yes, I have heard about the Atlantic coast and I promise myself that when I take early retirement in Dec 2008 [on health grounds] I am using part ofo my pension lump sum to spend a week or two in the MA/NE area and visit Nantucket and places like that. I have heard so much about the lpace I have to go see for myself.
camama, paracetamol is  a bog standard pain killer that you can but over the counter here and i t has many brand names the most common of which is Panadol. On the one hand it is an effective pain killer and is good for reducing temperature and it is also cheap as chips but on the other hand t can damage the liver fi taken to excess ie over the recommended dose and t s on dangerous drug touse for OD-ing!!!!!!!! One just needs to use t properly to get effective but not powerful pain relief.
I'm off to Manchester for three days this week - that's a city n the North West of England where you are born if you are not fortunate enough to  be born in Liverpool. We are a much maligned lot us scousers - the name given to Liverpudlians - called work shy, lazy, irish, all the ignorant epithets one can think of when all we are are perfectly balanced indviduals , a chipon both shoulders. More akin to New Yorkers [that's bound to get a few going there]. We like to think we are different that's alll. We are apparently famed for our sense of humour but anybody growing up there n the 50's 60's 70's adn 80's you needed a sense of humour to survive. The Beatles were the best thing to happen for LLiverpool at the time as it took away from the negative aspects for a while but they were by no means the best band to come out of the city - just had the best management and song writers. The city is a thriving lpace now withthree universities and students making up a fifth of the population and they have a tremendous efffect on the life of the cty. I really must do something with this 'i' key!!
When I visited New York some yyeyars ago I was struck with how similar in personality the people were to those from liverpool but that may not be a good thing in your views. I believe ny-ers have a reputation in the states but I may be wrong. WHAT DO WE KNOW HUH? Sorry bout that I didn't mean to shout.
Hey rheumes, if you think I ramble on too much tell me the hell to shut up! Ipromise not to take offence.
I'm lsoing track of where you all come from and it would help me build a picture in my mind of you all as people if you could tell me where you are from I know that yalinda is upstate NY is that right? camama where you from? erin is NY state? Boo are you the Okie? Ducky which pond do you swim n? I live in a place where  have made no attempt to get to know anybody in the 14 years I have lived here. Although I ledt Liverpool when I was 23 [now 56] most of my 'close' friends are still there and I have other long standing friends who live all over the country and am fortunate enough to have a job that takes me around the country and enables me to see them when I visit their area. This thread is full of interesting people who I want to 'talk' to [or talk at you might also say] but i just appreciate and am thankful for you collective tolerance. I work on the equivalent of you Seniors Programme and so don't get to talk to many people of 'my' half generation. What a social inadequate eh?
SIgn off time but when your helath is in a good phase do tell me about your areas not nosey just interested.
Time for nuts and berries and wake the bear cub - you don't want to wake the mommy bear without standing well clear.
Stay well people.

yeah  Yalinda, I've had many such experiences with my three daughters when they were teens.  Yup, scary.  My kids, it seems, never learned how to tell time, much like their father before he achieved sobriety.  Now they are parents.  What is it they say about paying for your raising?.....
Camamma, I'm hurtin' for ya.  Hope you get some relief soon.  That can get out of hand fairly quickly.
Bear, I hear ya.  Universal challenge of the "sandwich generation", children and parents to care for.  As for me (Boo, The Okie), we too sold our house and bought a bigger one with accommodations for my mother after a stroke.  She had a sort of master suite (this house had 2) and it worked out out very well.  She opted however to move into the Cadillac of retirement communities after a while.  Teenagers are noisy and she did know that I could not continue to meet her ever changing needs.  I still get a big lump in my throat when I think of my mother and wonder if I did enough even though I know I did.  I have already told my daughters that they will most likely end up with the same legacy and I probably won't be as nice as my mother was (lol).  I always picture myself as "Maxine" on the Hallmark cards.
Slow, sluggish day here.  Just don't even feel like getting dressed.  Oh and YES, Bear....you've probably got it right on the gumbo.  There's a lot of clay in the earth out here by the river.  That with manure, water and regular dirt makes what I call gumbo.  When hubby is out of town on rainy or snow covered days we have to hire someone to feed as my muscles will no longer allow me to walk through the stuff.  Boo skull
