So, when I saw my PCP a few weeks ago she asked, "are you having a rxxxxxx flare?" I wasn't sure what she asked and she replied, "your flushed cheeks." I said I wasn't sure and how can I find out and should I be worried?   tongue   She decided to move on and not answer me.

I know that because of flushed cheeks (among a few other indicators when I was a kid), my rhuemy feared I actually had Lupus and had me checked monthly.  It seems that I read with psoiriatic arthritis (which I have) you can have flushed cheeks as well. Also, I'm just FAT as a cow after all these health issues and therefore, I heat up easily and have that jolly fat look a lot. sad

Lately, my cheeks have started drying and getting little dry spots on them (I'm actually having a problem everywhere with the psorisis).....so, my questions are:

1. Any ideas what that "r" word was so I can look it up online and be prepared to ask my rhuemy about it next visit? (I keep thinking she said roseola - which I know it wasn't - but maybe it was something close.)

2. Any thoughts on where I should look for information on the flushed cheeks in general?

3. I don't want to put cortizone on my face, not that it's helps the psorisis THAT much in other areas (if that is what is happening) - any recommendations on what to help the dry spots (they are on my cheeks right below my eyes)? The basic face cream I have hasn't really helped.

Thanks for your input. ****

Hi CaMama,
Not sure, but could the doc have said "rosacea"? It's a skin condition that causes a red, flushed look on the cheeks. I think you can find info about it online, and they have different creams and stuff for it. My brother's doc told him to see a dermatologist because she thinks he has it, seems like he has used cortisone cream on it in the past.
Hope it helps!!
Sure hear you about the weight stuff...that's depressing!! I had just lost a bunch before all this, was actually pretty proud of myself, now it's all finding me again.....Yuck! Of course doesn't help that I get down, and the first thing I grab is chocolate!! I'm really bad.
Take care.

Hey mama.. I was thinking hte same thing as Jody.. Rosacea.. I looked it up on the MayoClinic website and here are some things it says to help prevent flares..

Here are other suggestions for preventing flare-ups:

~Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher to protect your face from the sun.
~Protect your face in the winter with a scarf or ski mask.
~Avoid irritating your facial skin by rubbing or touching it too much.
~Avoid facial products that contain alcohol or other skin irritants.
~When using moisturizer with a topical medication, apply the moisturizer after the medication has dried.
~Use products that are labeled noncomedogenic. These won't clog your oil and sweat gland openings (pores) as much.
~Avoid overheating.
~If you wear makeup, consider using green- or yellow-tinted pre-foundation creams and powders, because they're designed to counter skin redness.
~Avoid alcohol.

Hi Camama...Yep I was going to say the same as Ducky and Jody. Now that I am going off of my plaquenil, I will have a terrible time in the sun with my cheeks. I will also get rashes on my back. Before I started on my plaquenil a long time ago, I got a terrible out break of something like you are describing only I had sores inside my nose as well. My primary care doctor didn't know what it was but also mentioned the Roseacea. Maybe this is more common for us with autoimmune issues.

Hi there, CaMama

When I read your post, what you describe having-  sounds JUST like what I have going on with my face!  I've noticed it happening since about 2001, which, coincidently, is about the time all he** broke loose with my spine and joint problems.  People always asked me why my face was so red, too.  Only recently, with my fibromyalgia Dx did I realize it was rosacea.  Just today I picked up a complete skin care system to see if I can reduce the redness and the blemishes which have now begun to show up.  My white bumps LOOK like little pimples but they never seem to get sore OR clear up.

I hear you, too, with the weight issue!  IN 2001 when I met my hubby I was FIFTY pounds LIGHTER!  After back surgery and a host of other non-specific aliments, knee surgeries and general poor health, I've lost very little until recently.  At my rheumy appt on FRiday I was 8 lbsd lighter than when I stopped Weight Watchers 2 months ago AND for the past week I lived on virtually nothing but ice cream sandwiches!!!  Honest!    I even joke with Dave that I am on the ice cream sandwich diet!  LOL

Thanks everyone. I will look it up online.

Holly you mentioned white bumps.....does rosecea affect your neck too? I've gotten all these pimple-looking bumps (many of them white) on my neck as well as a dry rash on one side.   My face in general looks like I've got a strong suntan/burn, but I haven't been in the sun in quite a few days.  Lotion on my face has been stinging it (some are at least.)  Let me know how that new skin care product works for you.

Momto3 - the inside of your nose? What about your throat? Can that be affected? Mine has been hurting again today (just got over a severe case of strep, now I'm hurting again on the other side!)

Not to sound like a hypochondriac......but, could all this be a reaction to the antibiotic I took 2 weeks ago? Zithromycen (sp?)

Thanks for the empathy on the weight issues - I do appreciate it!

hey mama!

i've also had on again and off again red rash across my cheeks & nose and also on the chest. it was way worse before i started all these meds.
i've noticed though that if i'm too active or hot it gets worse & acts up.
pred brings it on too for me. umh...when i had lymes the rash was constant across the face (and was on a LOT of AX)
you allergic to sulfa?
good luck.
is it really painful? very hot? or is it just "there" and new and annoying?
how's your BP?
ciao!

Thanks Erin - yes, this is all new. The face dry spot and stinging started a few weeks back. The neck (exterior) just started within the last week. They (the rashes) are uncomfortable (slightly hurt) when touched, when left alone they are fine or sometimes slightly irritating. The throat pain (interior) started up this evening. This evening I noticed how red I looked overall....I didn't look like that last night and I've been indoors all day today.

Oh, the other thing that started in the last week is my arms have been itchy and the psorisis looks like it is spreading out a little more.

I haven't been allergic (that I know of) to sulfa in the past, however, my last attempt to take sulfasalizine was a bust as I was too sick on it to stick with the med. A few years back I was able to tolerate it.

My BP is typically low, however, at one of my 2 appts in the last month - the nurse reported it much higher than I usually am....the following appt. it was back in it's normal range. I wonder if the first nurse was just wrong - it was that off.

Hi and no I didn't have them in my throat. Only in my nose and my doctor was really concerned if they returned he wanted me to come back in. Off my plaq, I get strange rashes on my back as well. In the throat sounds like thrush?

As far as the red/suntan look, I do know that the MTX you can get an awful sunburn within a few minutes of being out in the sun, I learned the hard way!! I even burned THROUGH my jeans! yesterday with sunscreen I was starting to get red and my skin felt like it was beginning to burn. Are you on MTX?

Erin...do you have Lupus?

No, I don't take methotrexate anymore, I take plaquenil and arava.  The arava is 2 months new. And I was on a zithromycin (z-pack) 5-day antibiotic about 2 weeks go.  After that sore throat hit last night, my sinus' started hurting and I woke up very stuffy. I'm definitely coming down with/fighting something. That would explain a lot this past week - I wonder if the red face was a sign of my sinus's starting to swell and clog? (That wouldn't explain them being so red in general lately.) I am very sensitive to the sun nowadays - not sure if it's been the various meds or the PA - maybe a combo of both?

I'll do some research tonight and keep an eye on these rashes, itchy areas, bumps, as well as this new bug I seem to have.  If it gets worse, I'll call the doc.

Thanks everyone. ****

Hmm...well my husband had a horrid sinus infection and the side of his face was so swollen that he looked as if someone had punched him in the face. It was terrible! At first he thought it was his tooth because even his teeth hurt so he went to the dentist first but turned out to be sinuses..he is now on his second round of antibiotics from the ENT. They can really give you a lot of trouble!

I hope you feel better soon!

Camama,

I took sulfasalazine for 5 weeks and then broke out in a rash similar to what you're experiencing, but it was all over my body. It was a definite sulfa allergy and I was told never to take a sulfa drug again. I never used to be allergic to sulfa, and in fact had taken bactrim for chronic UTIs as a kid for several years. My rheumy said a sulfa allergy can develop at any point. I didn't get a chance to read all of the posts to this thread, so if this has been said please forgive me, but if you haven't mentioned this rash to your rheumy, please do so. If it is a sulfa allergy, then you need to stop taking the SSZ immediately. I almost ended up in the hospital with this rash.

I hope you feel better soon,
El

Hi CaMama,

Not sure if this is worth checking out, but it may be...just finished reading a magazine article about a woman with psoriasis. She said that after a bout of strep throat she noticed  a red rash that ended up to be cherry-red areas on her face, neck and other parts of her body. She thought she was allergic to the anitbiotics, but ended up she had a different version of psoriasis, called guttate psoriasis.  Said it often comes on suddenly and a common trigger is strep throat alothough upper respiratory infections, toncillitis, stress, and medications can contribute.

She had been being treated for psoriasis for many years before this happened to her.  Just thought is was way weird that I read this after your posting about the red rash...

Hope you are well!
Jody

hey momto3

to answer your question 'bout lupus...not to my knowledge, NO. although, about 7 years ago my initial rheummy said, "I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be Lupus come a few years down the line."
however, i am glad that most of my meds cover lupus anyways...i don't think about it, in fact it never crosses my mind. i believe my ANA has always been negative.
but I DO have the lupus panels drawn at least once a year just because my PCP knows that rheummy had that thought.
ciao mom!

Hi Erin,

I was just curious because you mentioned your red rash on your nose and cheeks.

Well, I stopped sulfasalzine a few months back. I looked up the ingredients to the antibiotics - unless the sodium lauryl sulphate is the same sulfa we're talking about, I don't know:

What do ZITHROMAX Tablets Contain?

ZITHROMAX Tablets 250 mg contain azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 250 mg

azithromycin and the following inactive ingredients: pregelatinized starch, anhydrous calcium

phosphate dibasic, sodium croscarmellose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulphate,

hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, titanium dioxide, triacetin and D&C Red #30

aluminum lake.

It also said that some reaction could happen weeks after stopping the anitbiotic.

Thanks for the tip, babyplace, I will research it. I see rhuemy in 2 weeks.

Well, the rashes are not getting worse (at least the last few days) but they are not getting much better. I have been putting cortizone cream on them (except my face), and sticking with my usual au natural face (I rarely wear makeup anyway and now it's too hot!)

I did read that 10% of patients do get rashes on Arava. But, the 2 illnesses in 1 month, plus a round of antibiotics, a bunch of stress.......who really knows what is causing all this. I'm still wary of staying on the Arava....but, I'll see what my next blood count says and if I have a healthy or ill summer.

I am still sick - the sore throat is still there, congestion, and much of it has moved to my chest and I have a wicked sounding cough. Still holding off calling the doctor until I feel OTC meds no longer can give me help. It's been a week now since this 2nds illness hit.

I have to reschedule my rhuemy appt on the 26th because we'll be out of town....I'm hoping to see him next week if possible and discuss this.

confused  do you by chance have COPD?  i don't ever remember you saying that...but the "chronic this & that's" you get...mostly upper resp & sinus etc...did anyone ever rule that out?
the thought just popped in my head.
i thought of my friend's mom who has bronchitis or a sinus like 300 days a year...and it's due to COPD.
just picking my own mind.
ciao mama!

Maybe because it's 11:30 p.m. or maybe I'm just an idiot...what is COPD? Would that be releated to the rashes as well or just the respatory (too tired to even try to spell that) problems?

My throat still hurts, even with all this congestion (you'd think it would coat the throat! ewww!) and my head and ears are starting to swell....I'm starting to have this awful feeling I'm going to be spending Father's Day in Urgent Care. sad I hope not. Maybe this is the virus' last hurrah before it exit's this old body! One can hope!

I actually did really well for about 13 months...I was only on the Plaquenil. Now since the Arava I've been sick twice in a very short period of time.....I know the flu season around here is still going strong, but this is ridiculous. I don't think I wasn't off the antiobiotcs a full week before I got sick again!
