Just wondered if anyone can help me out.  Should have checked this much sooner, but just happened to think of it.  We're taking a trip by plane tomorrow, and not sure how to handle all of the medical supplies.  My son is a diabetiic on an insulin pump, carries extra syringes, insulin, pump supplies,  along with blood sugar testing supplies.  Is that stuff a pain to get through airport security? Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

Hey there.. take his prescriptions with you.. that way when you go through security, you can show it to them, and they will handle you guys separately.. More than likely, they'll take care of the meds/syringes for you once you get on the plane, and give it back to you when you land.. I know when I flew, I took my prescription and showed it to them, and they stored everything for me.. no fuss,no muss! :) :) Good luck!

Thanks so much..do you mean his actual paper prescriptions? Most of his supplies have a prescription label on the packaging, but not on things like the syringes, glucose tablets, alcohol wipes, etc.
I was mostly concerned about the syringes and the pump sites (they have needles in them too). Hopefully I can find the paper scripts if I need them, we do some much by phone-in refills!!
Thanks again,
Jody

Hey Jody.. yes, that's what I mean.. or even if you have some type of paperwork from the doctor documenting that it is a "legal" med for him, know what I mean? I had to get my script from the pharmacy as well as a note from the doc "just in case".. What airline are you flying with?

Hey there Jody..

I found this on the TSA (Transporation Security Administration) Website:

You may bring all prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including KY jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes.

Additional items you may bring include:

  • Liquids including water, juice, or liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition;
  • Life-support and life-sustaining liquids such as bone marrow, blood products, and transplant organs;
  • Items used to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons such as mastectomy products, prosthetic breasts, bras or shells containing gels, saline solution, or other liquids; and,
  • Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions.

You are not limited in the amount or volume of these items you may bring in your carry-on baggage.  BUT if the medically necessary items exceed 3 ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, you MUST declare to one of our Security Officers at the checkpoint for further inspection.

Here is the link so you can read all it says.. but it seems, as long as you declare it to the security personnel, you should be good to go!  Good luck to you and be safe traveling!
