I had salmonella ten years ago, but didn't start getting reactive arthritis symptoms until five years ago.  I would get fevers out of the blue and be down-and-out for 3-5 days and this would happen every 2-4 months. I also had uveitis twice.   I underwent tons of tests and blood work and came back tissue type HLA-B27.  Recently I had most outbreak?/episode where I got a 104 fever with severe joint pain and add intestinal infection.  I also have a constant urge to urinate.  They did some bloodwork and found me slightly enemic which may explain the fatigue I have been having.  The rhem gave me a tapered dose of steriods for the latest outbreak.  Just wanted to talk with anyone else out there that has this and see what they are going through and treatments/things they have done.  I am 31 years old with two young kids and feel quite old with the outbreaks and fatigue.  Thanks for your responses.

Hey there rgtr welcome to Healing Well.. sorry it has to be under these circumstances.. Is your rheumy going to give you anything other than the steriods? How long are you to take them? How are you feeling? I hope you are doing well.. take good care..

Hello Rgtr & Welcome. Reactive Arthritis (ReA) is one of several forms of arthritis that fall into the catagory of Spondyloarthropathy (SpA). These types of arthritis all have similar symptoms and the diagnostics involved are the same as are the treatments.

Right now, I'm Dx with Unspecified SpA, but we expect that it will eventually be changed to Ankylsing Spondylitis (AS) as the disease progresses. I started Humira in February and had great results, but they wore off several days before I was due for my next injection. In April, that my schedule was changed from every 2 weeks to every week and the coverage is much better now. We also added some prednisone to help get the inflammatin under control. Finally, I am seeing some real, lasting relief from the fatigue and joint pain that have been a part of my life for so long.

There is an excellent webiste for info about the SpAs. I'd recommend that you do some reading and prepare yourself with questions regarding testing, results and treatment options in advance of your next Doctor's visit. http://www.spondylitis.org

Meanwhile, feel free to pop back and ask any questions that you have. There's almost always someone here who has an answer or who at least can empathize with the problem.

Hi rgtr, I just read your post and wanted to share my husbands story. He hasn't been officially diagnosed with reactive arthritis yet but it is suspected. In April he had diarrhea that lasted 6 weeks. After that finally went away he had a all over body rash and then terrible joint aches to the point of not even being able to work. He also just felt lousy in general. At that time he had a endoscopy and colonoscopy, all sorts of blood work and a cat scan of entire torso. The gastro doc said he could find nothing wrong and he thought it was reactive arthritis. He started feeling alot better so he forgot about it and now 5 months later he has the body rash again, headache, feeling of being flushed, increased heartrate(off and on) and feels beat. Yesterday he went to family doc who thought it is allergy or reactive arthritis flare-up. She sent him to dermatoligist who thinks rash is viral. We are confused and don't know what to do. Would just like to figure out for sure what is causing this array of symptoms!
