Hello Everyone,

I am new here. I am a 40 yr mother of two. I have been diagnosed with PSRA(post strep reactive arthritis) mostly beacause i donot fall into the full critera of Rheumatic Fever. Back in Jan/06 I got strep throat, i was sicker than i had ever been before temp was 104 4 days straight didn't matter what i did it would not go lower. I went to Doc after 2 days with illness and was given Keflex antibiotics. Took ALL of the meds and returned to work about week later. about 10 days after i started with leg pain sorta like a really bad workout. It got worse everyday until about the 20th day both my legs swelled alot. I was bed-ridden for about 8 -9 weeks. The pain was outta this world. It was like a was attached to horses going the opposite direction. I was seen by Hemo-globin specialists/ Rheumatolagists. Was put on amitripyline, arhtrotec, morphine. My blood work was the only thing talking at that time. Elevated sed rate was 40 something, Platlet count was 700

Anyways was diagnosed with what the thought was fibromyagia. I started to improve mid August. But come Sept i again got strep throat Sept/Oct twice in 2 mths both times treated very quickly with antibiotics. But illness wasnot as severe. But days following all my symptoms(pain in legs swelling of hands) just got 10 times worse. Finally i was referred to a Infectious disease doc(not that i was infectious only during time of actually outbreak of strep) He put me on long term antibiotics. I also was watched for heart issues as for strep is known to attack heart muscles!! so far all is well. But the pain in my legs is constantly high. I left my job the day my legs ballooned in Feb/06 and have not worked a day since. This has been very difficult for I do love to work. I have a saying "gee i turned 39 and my whole body fell apart. My hubby has been my rock through out all this and of course my chilrdren keep me as active as i can be. But its been very hard it has affected every aspect of my life. I finally just recently applied for disability mostly cuz my doc has pushed me too told me i should have done this 6 mthns ago. I just want my life back. Saw my doc yesterday and well i have pretty bad swelling at this moment too much walking i guess. My doc had hoped that being on the penicillion since NOv/06 would improve the arthritis with time. But he now feels that the pain i am in is due to the damage the strep has already caused. He also is feeling that the pain might not ever go away. My ASO titre( thats the antibodies i am still producing in my body) has slowly started to lower. It has been in the 1000's for the past yr(most healthy people's aso count is about 100-150. Mine is down to about 700 right now. The doc hopes over the next 6 thms it will go down completely. But the pain may be here to stay. I literally felt like an alien for the past yr because it was hard to find any info on this. Just recently i am getting quite abit through the internet & of course my doc. But he even states still not alot known about the affects of strep and once it gets in your blood stream its difficult to get out.

I am so sorry this is so long but i made it as short as i could and thank-you for reading my posts any feedback at all will be greatly appreciated

Blessings

Leigh

Hi Leigh and welcome! I don't have any experience quite with what you are going through (though I believe my life long struggle with RA is a direct result from having rubella as a child) but I wanted to give you my support. Try not to stress about the pain 'possibly staying' right now. Focus on what is improving and getting what you can better. Stress is NOT going to help - I know it's much easier said than done!!! I went years wondering if I would be spending the rest of my life walking like an 80 year-old or if I'd be well enough to have kids eventually (which - knock on wood - I was.)

Sounds like your strep throat was really in the scarlet fever category.

It's tough being in so much pain and raising a family. There are many of us here dealing with that as well and I hope you stick around. This place can be awesome therapy! Hopefully, as you get better, so will your pain and swelling. It takes time and you've made it this far! Hang in there!

Take care****
