They are in the same category, but as docs will say "same but different" which means you could be completely non-responsive to one, but respond to the other just fine.
My experience: I feltnreally rotten on methotrexate (took in 2002). I've been on arava since April now.....it is helping - whereas I didn't notice as much w/mthx (but a lot was going on then as well and I started it w/other meds.) I don't feel as rotten - but this time I knew to increase the H20, take Folic Acid, and B complex from the get-go.....don't know if that is a factor, as noone told me to do that until 8 months later on mtx. When I started the mthx, I was still in baby fog as i was only 7 mo. post partum and had a difficult time overall from having baby - which also set off a severe flare a mere 10 hours after having him and it lasted for quite some time.....
I'm having some issues right now that may be a result of the arava or prolong effects from a severe case of strep and a virus in May/June. Nothing serious so far (knock on wood), just annoying more than anything. Time will tell.
Does any of this babble help you at all?
Good luck. ****
Oh - they do have a med to get arava out of your system quickly if you respond poorly to it. apparently (and I find this scary) it can stay in your system up to 2 years or something!
