Because this pain in my hips and back is almost unbearable.  Not sure if you remember my other post about being confused as to whether I could have arthritis or not.  But anyway, the doc didn't refer me to a rheumy yet because she wants to try and control the pain first.  She said I have Sacroiliitis and I go in on the 20th for steroid injections or a consult (not sure what he's gonna do - this is my first appt with the pain doc) plus she gave me Skelaxin to help control the muscle spasms.  I asked her if I could have AS or some sort of arthritis and she just nodded her head - said it was possible because of my Uc, wrote something down, and felt my SI joints (which made me jump out of my skin when she pressed!).  So anyway, here is my question......how many of you who have AS was told they have Sacroiliitis first?  I read that Sacro. can be a sign of AS, is that true?  Has anyone has steroid shots to help with the pain and if so, how long did you find relief for?

Hey Sherry.. sorry you are still in so much pain.. hopefully you get relief soon.. I was never diagnosed with sacroilitis.. sorry.. but I have read and heard from many people that it is a sign of AS.. I have had the steroid shots.. not fun.. but give temporary relief.. depending on the pain and dosage, the shots would last me for as long as a week to as little as a day.. :( Maybe your doc is going to do the steroid injection and a consult on the 20th? That would be nice! :) Hang in there and let us know what you find out!

Just the idea of shots make me shiver but at this point, I'm so ready for some kind of relief! They only lasted you a week Ducky? Wow, that's not a very long time is it?

I have sacroiliitis and had my right SI joint injected in September after suffering months of worsening SI pain. I never knew how much pain I had been in until it was taken away! Relief was wonderful. The shot was done using a xray guided technique. There was only a momentary slight discomfort. I was not sedated for mine but I was told that they do sedate some people. I have had lots of joints injected and never flinched so they decided not to sedate me.

Sacroiliitis is one of the signs of AS. People with inflammatory bowel diseases are at greater risk to get this than the general population.

I hope your injection brings you as much relief as I received!

I think that will be the same deal with me Ides. I know that I have been in pain for quite some time but I think that we sort of get "used" to it if you know what I mean? It wasn't until recently that I just can't ignore it anymore. I am truly hoping that I find relief soon - I'm too young to be feeling so old! :)

And thank you!

I have sacroiliitis (my SI joints are almost completely fused). I've not had injections - went straight to the biologics since I also have RA. My dad had AS (no IBD) and that's who I inherited mine from (I'm positive for one of the genes for AS). As mentioned above, sacroiliitis is the primary hallmark of AS. Red, did your doctor do xrays to verify the sacroiliitis? I'm sorry you're going thru this with little relief, I hope the shots help.

No, she didn't do any xrays. She had me stand and she pressed on my SI joints which btw hurt like nobody's business! Both my sides are affected when she pressed. I'm a little better today. I've been taking it easy and not walking so much and it seems to be working. Though I still feel a constant "throb" in that area with occasion spikes of pain but at least it's not constant anymore. Plus the Skelaxin seems to be keeping my muscles from going crazy.

Update if anyone is interested. I had the steroid injections as planned. Boy, I felt like a pincushion! That night, my hips were one painful mess but the next morning I felt like a new woman! I was totally astounded that I was *sort of* pain free. I still hurt at the injection site but that constant throbbing was gone. Fast forward to now, I went back in to see the pain doc and I was happy to report that my pain is now 60% better. I still have some bad days but not like before. I go see him again in March but he asked if I felt I needed another injection at that time, so I told him no - I don't think I need one just yet. But I went in for xrays of my hips and spine. I will be happy to report that there was no fusing and the spaces in between the discs were normal as well as the little thingys that come out of it - forgot what the doc called it. He said I had minimal arthritis so as of now, we are just watching this.

Oh I forgot to mention that I found out that I have nerve damage on the right side of my body. He did the reflex hammer thing on my knees and only my left responded. My right leg had no reaction. Does anyone happen to know what causes nerve damage?

I don't know the cause of the nerve damage but am glad that you found at least some relief from the pain and that the exrays show such little damage.
