My wife was diagnosed with SS about 6 months ago.  She has all the dry symptoms caused by Sjogrens, but she also has severe burning of the lips, mouth, throat and vaginal area.  Is there anyone out there who has suffered with these symptoms.  If so and you have found something that gives you relief from the burning, I sure would appreciate the help for her.  Thanks-Pilot

Make sure to drink plenty of water, and try a lip balm with vitamin e, can be found at wal-mart...
make sure her doctor is aware of the burning and also ask her doctor for help on this, ask her
doctor if your wife could try a little olive oil in the vaginal area, I use it occassionally...
well wishes

I was diagnosed with Sjorgen's several years ago and have also experienced the burning in my mouth and lips, along with a swellon tongue. After several visits to my dentist and RA doctor I found a doctor that had an answer. She gave me a mouth rinse which consisted of tetracyclian, hydrocordison and nyasin. After two days the burning sensation went away. I had this mix compounded by two different pharmacies. One taste ok and the other was horrible but it took care of the problem.

Wish her the best.

I have my first reumatologist appointment today, but I have been experiencing all the same symptoms. For the vaginal burning licaine gel, vagicaine and ice work. Ice actually helps a lot. Vagisil maximim strength helps a lot to because I drive a bus and the pain is worse when sitting for a while. I hope this helps :)

I have terrible dry eyes and have had a corneal tear etc. but i mentioned to my rheumy the other day that my lips are always so hot like they need constant lip balm because the heat keeps me using more and more, like they r always chapped!

I have year long dry and chapped lips too. Classic spearmint chapstick helps. I only use medicated stuff like carmax or blistex when they are really bad. Burts bees is good too if you can tolerate the taste.

I also get dry and chapped lips. Products such as Carmex and Blistex make my lips worse, especially in the winter. I use a Vaseline lip product in a tube.

I am happy to say the only medication I take is ibuprofen at night to sleep along with my supplements for sleeping. I am on a regiment of different supplements, I eat very nutritiously, and ever since my injury years ago I have been doing my prescribed stretches x2 daily.

I have RA and have not been diagnosed with Sjogrens. I came hear looking for info. My eyes itch and burn, my mouth is so dry, I have to take a drink of water immediately if I try to eat a cracker, and my vagina is dry and burning. My urologist gave me a hormone cream for the vagina issue. It has helped a lot. I think I will mention all of this to my RD when I see her in Debember. Sound like Sjogrens???

Thanks,

What works for my dry, itchy lips is Lansinoh cream (pure lanolin) and 1% hydrocortisone ointment, mixed together in the palm of my hand. You must be sure to get hydrocortisone ointment, not cream because the ointment contains only hydrocortisone and petrolatum. Avoiding irritants on the lips is very important -- the reason products like Blistex sting when applied is that they contain ingredients like menthol and camphor which are the worst things possible for skin. Hope this helps.

I have only had the burning of the lips, and have tried numerous products. What works for me is Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment. It is not a permanent solution, but it numbs the lips temporarily. I have several tubes of it to make sure I don't run out.

Hope this helps, Mary.

Thanks, Chartreux. Do I need to see an opthamologist, or will an optomitrist do for my eye appointment? I have an appt in March with my RD. I am using that Biotene mouthwash, and it helps a lot. Thanks so much! BTW, my tongue burns...is that part of Sjogrnes maybe???

You need a ophthalmologist, they know about diseases of the eye and are medically certified to treat them.

An optometrist can fit glasses, but that's all.

However, if you are already seeing a Rheumotologist, I'd start with talking to them. Sometimes Sjogren's can be diagnosed with bloodwork without need for a painful lip biopsy or an extensive eye exam. It depends a lot on how your rheumy wants to address it, but I'd talk to him/her first.

While I have seronegative RA and have experienced dry mucus membranes, I also now have a bad burning sensation in my mouth. I am going to go to my dentist to see what she can do for me. They are trying to taper my prednisone down now. Others have recommended to me to see if I am low in B vitamins as that can cause burning mouth. I want to get re-tested for sjogrens.

I was diagnosed with Sjogrens almost a year ago.  I do not have the pain or burning in my mouth but only in my throat and chest.  Most people would call this GERD but not understanding why my eye pain is associated with it?  Seems like the two go together.  I never have one of the symptoms without the other. Any thoughts?

Well, if Sjogrens is flaring then wouldn't it be flaring all over your body? So anywhere that is a Sjogrens place for you would be involved.

For me it's my eyes and ears, both get dry, itchy and hypersensitive at the same time.

Hope that helps.

That would make sense. I have found some other sites that have also linked Sjogrens and GERD so I will just continue to treat the symptoms.
Thanks.

I have sjorgrens for several years. I used the otc eyedrops for awhile but had to go on restasis. I used normal saline nose spray for my nose as well as two different sprays that were prescribed to help with my allergys and ears. My left ear stays stopped up and is hurting now, haven't really found any relief for it except a tube in it several months ago. I will probably have to go back to the ear Dr. this week. It is also effecting my teeth, I will see the dentist tomorrow for some work. I use evoxac for my dry mouth and would not trade it for anything, it has made things so much better. I stay hydrated during the day and hope the evoxac and a humidifier lets me sleep at night. I used biotene mouth wash to help also, sometimes in the middle of the night.
Don't use alcohol based mouth wash that makes it worse.

I use esterace cream for the vaginal area, and it does help.

I have gerd, and it seems to be assosiated with the Sjorgrens also. I take two aciphex a day and am real careful about what I eat. No spicy or rich foods.

I am learning to live with it by trial and error. Some meds also effects it by making your mouth drier. I had to get off of trazadone.

Hope things get better for you.

Hi Pilot et al. Regarding mouth pain, to paraphrase my book by the Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation, about 1/3 of Sjogren's patients will develop burning on their tongue or elsewhere in their mouth as a result of Candida fungus. I use a nystatin solution prescribed by my rheumy that I swish & spit out. Besides burning, the tongue loses it's normal carpet texture and unlike with thrush, the tongue and other parts of the mouth also becomes red. The corners of the outside of the mouth can also become red and crusty.

I saw my GYN a few months ago and told him I couldn't have intercourse because each time we tried I had terrible pain, so I quit having sex. I also mentioned some of the over the counter products I tried. He prescribed Vagifem 10 mcg and Replens which is OTC. I had tried Replens moisturizer and he said it alone would not cure the pain. I had to take the Vagifem with it. Vagifem is inserted into the vagina and each tiny tablet comes with an applicator. He also said it would be a few months on these meds before I could have intercourse comfortably. I still have slight pain during sex, but it's minor compared to what it was.

Oh, I hope MPMgirl reads this. I didn't know that you can get thrush in your esophagus, until it happened to me. Then my rheumy prescribed an anti-fungal swish & swallow.

Today I had an endoscopy to insure I didn't have a mechanical problem making dry food hard to swallow. Doc found a small stricture as the junction of my esophagus and stomach. He said it's very common. He widened the stricture, but also said most of my problem was probably due to my Sjogren's. Love, Butterflake
