I'm in a place now, where I make too much money to qualify for subsidized healthcare (In the county where I live, if your monthly income is below a certain amount, you qualify for sliding scale insurance). However, my health insurance from work doesn't kick in until the 1st of April. I have enough medication to make it until then, but my greatest fear is that my insurance won't cover bipolar disorder because it is a pre-existing condition. And, even if it does, I am afraid that I'll have to pay a fortune to see a psychiatrist. I am making more money, but I am by no means getting rich. It is a crime that many people with mental illnesses could be leading normal productive lives, but getting professional help is a catch-22.

If you are joining a GROUP insurance plan (especially a large one), they can not reject you or not cover BP. It is considered a major mental illness, and must be covered as any other illness, which includes doctors. Just make sure the codes (CPT) being used by the doctor are the correct ones. Be aware, the key is you have to see the doctors on the plan to get the full benefits and you may have costs the insurance will not cover. But, it should be covered. Additionally, you will want to elect PPO coverage vs. HMO in order to maintain as much of the control as you can for the care you get. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of the "primary" doctor to be making the right decisions on your behalf. Hope this info helps you a bit. LFW
