Skeeter Bug, I'm just passing through from the ulcerative colitis forum, and I don't know much about
bipolar, but I do know that smelling specific odors occurs in some people with epilepsy before a seizure. Also some migraine sufferers will have a smell that heralds a coming headache. In both cases there are changes in the brain (electrical, circulation) that cause these smells. It seems possible that it could also happen in the way you describe, with chemical changes in your brain. It could be a real gift to you, letting you start treating the depression before it deepens.
Do mention it to your doc when you see him.
