Has anyone ever experienced strange odors they smelled before a manic episode. is this something to be concerned with before I am smelling a strange odor and it is similar to an odor i smelled before my last manic episode. I have been under alot of stress lately with my husband being in jail

Hmmmm! This sounds strange to me. I have never heard anything like this before. Perhaps you should talk it over with your doctor.

That's new to me, Skeeter_Bug, but if it happened before your last manic episode, at least mention it to your doc. It may be nothing, but let him/her tell you that. I'm sorry about your husband -- you must be under a tremendous amount of stress right now.

What is really stressing me out is i am practically ready for a wheel chair and i cannot even hardly take care of myself. then i tried to pay the mortgage and the mortgage company will not accept the payment because it is my husbands acct and i am not on it. I told them i didn't want account info i just want to make the damm payment. then just now a cop came to my door ragging me about the dog crap in my yard and that i had to clean it up. I told him that i could not do it because i was disabled he called me a lyer and told me I only had a couple of days. I told him I was not the home owner my husand was. just because I answered the damm door. well when he was pulling out I flipped him. I couldn't help it i am so mad. my husband is in jail they will not let him out and believe it or not his charges are misdeamors. well I will let them cite me then i will fight it in court.

Skeeter Bug, I'm just passing through from the ulcerative colitis forum, and I don't know much about bipolar, but I do know that smelling specific odors occurs in some people with epilepsy before a seizure. Also some migraine sufferers will have a smell that heralds a coming headache. In both cases there are changes in the brain (electrical, circulation) that cause these smells. It seems possible that it could also happen in the way you describe, with chemical changes in your brain. It could be a real gift to you, letting you start treating the depression before it deepens.

Do mention it to your doc when you see him.

Thanks Judy,

I didn't know about that. Interesting and useful to know.

Serafena, it's called an "aura." It can be visual or a taste or smell. Occasionally it's even auditory. If one brain disorder can have it, I don't see why others couldn't.
