Hi saabbaby,

Welcome to Healingwell and to our board. There's always a period of uncertainty, but having manic symptoms on antidepressants is a clue to most doctors. Lamictal is a good drug. Any drug works differently for everybody so everyone on this board who's tried it is going to have a different story about it. I'm BP II as well and also on Lamictal among other things. It's done well for me. I wish you luck. Feel free to chime in with questions or opinions whenever you like.

Hi saabbaby,

I too am on Lamictal for Bipolar I; I'm up to 200mg/day.  As Serafena said it's a good drug, but may not be for everyone.  This is also a drug that must be increased at a very gradual pace.  I know what you mean about the ups and downs - we are working with one of my other meds to see if we can help control the roller coaster of ups and downs and the side effects that I am experiencing from it.  I hope this drug works for you, keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

Take care,
Wen

Bipolar is like that. It's triggered sometimes by life events. You'll be doing okay, or you'll be depressed, and all of a sudden you'll have a manic phase, and voila, you're bipolar. I know it feels like everyone is a little crazy, and everyone is a little nuts maybe, but not like us. It's time for you to do a little research to see if you can get to know bipolar disorder and come to own it a little bit. If you disagree with the diagnosis then you need a second opinion. If you believe your doctor and you're just struggling to see how it applies to you, you might consider some reading. I have a great book, it's called "The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide" by David Miklowitz. And there are several good books out there that might help you come to terms with your "new life" a little bit more.
