I was just diagnosed on monday with bipolar.  I had suspected it for a while but hadn't done anything about it until things had gotten really bad.  I have been dealing with it most likely since my mid teens.  Fortunately, I haven't had any psychotic episodes or hallucinations and i haven't been hospitalized.  Although I have come really close to having a breakdown several times.  things have gotten worse over the years.  I don't seem to have any normal moods anymore.  when I do they don't last very long.
I am married with 7 children living in the middle east.  My family is in the US so I don't get the support I need from them.  Not because they don't want to but it is difficult when they are half way around the world.  and when I am in my depressed mood and I don't feel like talking to anyone, I may not call them for a couple of weeks. I went to a couple of other boards.  One of them I only got one response.  On the other, one woman is adamant that I don't have Bipolar and keeps coming up with other possiblities.  although I don't know why.  Anyway, I am trying to find the right board for me.  Nice to meet everyone.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it!

Welcome to HW, I hope you find the support that you are looking for here. You are not alone, and there are a lot of people who have and are going through a similar thing now, living away from family and friends. Distance can make communication hard. Again welcome aboard, and feel free to jump in.

welcome twisted, I'm new to the bipolar family, and like you I have dealt with it for years alone..I went to see a therapist and she said I was bipolar..I don't have any advice, but one ...keep writing I also just found out in June I have crohn's. So I'm on two forums and I'm so glad I found this one... Your not alone here and you always have a shoulder to cry on,and someone to listen to you... I've found out so about crohn's, and I'm learning about bipolar disorder... Stay here for awhile it can really help..

Welcome twisted71,

I hope you find the support you are looking for here at healingwell. I have been around here a long time so I guess you can tell that I sure like it around here.

Wow, it must be very hard to have your family so far away. If you don't mind me asking, how old are your children? I only ask because I have a 26, 22 & 19 year old children and they are a huge support to me. They understand this illness and know how to work with me during my ups & downs. My husband also is a huge supporter.

It was different for me when I was diagnosed. I too had been suffering since my teens but just never had a name for it until I had a complete breakdown and ended up in the hospital.

My husband & children came to visit me and they were learning about this new illness just like I was. We had a sit down meeting with my psychiatrist and he explained everything to  my family on what to expect and answered questions that they had. He asked my family if they were willing to all be part of my support network.

Maybe you could arrange a meeting for your next appointment with your psychiatrist and ask your husband and children (depending on their age) if they would please join you. This worked for me.

Again, Welcome aboard! smurf

you say you are living in the middle east.  do yo have problems getting professional help where you are?  how about meds?  i understand that it can get really lonely out there.

but we are here for you.  rant, rave, join in with opinions and disagree vehmently!  above all, have a great time.
