Hi Everyone-
Ok I'm a little confused. Around 2000 doctors thought that I had OCD. I've been on meds ever since which has change my life. However I do still have episodes which can last a week to month. This can usually be fixed with medication adjustment. This year I ended up in the hospital after a very bad episode including depression, anxiety, severe mood swings and irrability. My psych would l love and trust said I'm exhibiting symptoms more like bipolar. So in the hospital they started me on Lamictal which has done wonders.
I recently bought the book the Bipolar Handbook (which I totally recommend) and was blown away at how I fit into so many of the signs. I do not suffer from extreme mania, more like hypomania (spending money and feeling great!) I think it was more because my mood was going up and down within a day. I noticed on my last psych bill that she put in a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, but in our session she talked to me about bi-polar. So I'm totally confused.
Any thoughts?

Hi.  It sounds like you fall under Bipolar II which experiences more depression than mania
since you said you are more like hypomania (which is what I am).  Your doctor may just be coding you as major depressive disorder on her paperwork/billing since that is what you suffer from the most.  You are still Bipolar though, Bipolar II.  If it bothers you, I would ask her next time to find out for sure.  Bipolar covers a lot of territory, you know.  It might just be easier for her to code you that way.
That is my opinion and thoughts.  I could be wrong.  I would ask her though to be sure.
Hope you have a good day.

Hi Zolscody,

Welcome to our board.

I agree totally with Missflip. Your doctor may just be coding you that way for insurance purposes too. (Heaven knows why, but she may have a reason.) Ask her, she'll let you know. If you agree the diagnosis fits, then let her know that.
