Hi everyone, I usually post on Crohns board, but, wanted to see if anyone had some insight for me.  Along with the CD, I have been dx with depression/general anxiety.  I take cymbalta 60 mg daily.  With all my health issues, I'm just having so much trouble getting out of this black hole.  Anyway, my doc want to put me on lithium as a mood stabilizer for me.  I understand this drug is used with bipolar patients.  My doc says I'm not bipolar but the drug will boost the effects of cymbalta.  My question next time I see her will be why not increase the cymbalta?  But, I would love to have anyone comment on lithium.  What side effects do you have? How long have you been on it? Any information what be greatly appreciated, I see the doc on Thursday so I want to have educated myself on this drug.  I know I will have to take lots of blood tests intially.  Thanks in advance.

Hello keepingthefaith,

In some cases mood stabilisers help people who are depressed and that is probably why your pdoc suggested it. It has shown improvements on some patients with depression, but I do not know the success rate. Don't be afraid to raise up your questions or concerns with your pdoc. You do not want to be taking something that you are not comfortable taking.

I have been on lithium as a mood stabiliser for over 2 years now. The side effects that I have are pretty mild, though that is not the case for everyone. I do have frequent cravings for carbohydrates, I tend to have sensitivity to hot weather. Also, I have have gained less than 10 lbs on it, but losing weight has been next to impossible on it. It makes you retain some water. Some people do gain a lot of weight on lithium, but that depends on an individual basis.

Olivia, thanks so much for your reply.  I did not know about the water/weight gain issue.  I do need to gain weight but not too much.  Anyway, I go tomorrow & I guess the drug is worth a try.  I just had cervical neck fusion & feeling a little better, but, I can tell my anxiety is still very high.  I just so fatigued all the time, but, can't sleep at night.  Oh well, got to keep the faith!  Thanks again.
