I have really been trying to feel in tune with my emotions on a daily basis, as my pdoc suspects I am a rapid cycler.  Yesterday I felt pretty down and lethargic and lounged around in my pyjamas all day.  Today, however, I feel so high that my hands are even shaking.  I want to shop.  I want to go get my hair cut.  I feel a little skinnier than normal.  I am a teacher and have been feeling very anxious about the coming year but today I am actually excited to start planning and getting ready.  In the past, these are the days that would get me in trouble because normally I WOULD go shopping, I WOULD chop off my hair.  Since I'm off for the summer, I would probably have even started drinking by now.  On the other hand, this is the me that I am going to miss.  It's such a double edged sword isn't it?  I need to do something productive to get all of this energy out.

Oh yes, definitely do something creative or engaging to capture that energy. Do you have hobbies or is there anything you've ever wanted to try? These moods are good for trying things you wouldn't ordinarily so how about taking a dance class or signing up for a painting workshop? Do you garden? Something that won't suffer if you have to leave it alone for a little while if you have a depressed period, but will make you feel good.

Do you keep a mood chart? That can help your doc decide if you're a rapid cycler and help you track patterns in your moods. Here's one example at The Massachusetts General Hospital Bipolar site www.manicdepressive.org/moodchart.html. There are lots more if you just google mood chart.

Hope that's useful.

Well, I ended up meeting a girlfriend for coffee (decaf, of course). Then I did about an hour of yoga/pilates. Luckily today was my daughter's mommy and me dance class so we went to that, too and we went to visit her preschool. We are on summer break right now. If I still feel this way tomorrow I already have a plan so I stay out of trouble. I have never been able to get into exercising, but I am really trying to get into yoga and pilates. So, I think that will have to be my outlet. Thanks for giving me that mood chart!

i try to do yoga on the days i have lots of energy, but then i'll just lay around the next day and never get to doing it again for about another week. i'm way too depressed and the heat does not help me get moving. it seems i've stayed in my bedroom all summer! i crashed and burned after i graduated this year; i don't think i've ever been more depressed.
