i'm brittany, 18 years old. i was diagnosed with bp II about two years ago; i'm now on 1000 mg depakote. not really liking it, though, it makes me more depressed than usual. i just ended my first long term relationship, and it's probably the hardest thing i've ever been through. i've been isolating a lot lately, and i'm not in a good state of mind. my therapist suggested i join some sort of support group so i found this place. =) from what i've read so far you guys seem wonderful.

Hi Brittany. Welcome to the board. :)  I am also on 1000 of depakote.  However I dont like it because of the weight gain.  Otherwise it has made me feel better.  Is that the only med you are taking right now?

Hi Brittany,

There are other mood stabilizers out there and not every one works forever...some have better luck with depakote than others. If you have a psych you trust, I would definitely go to him/her and talk about your options. There's always hope.

also...as far as support groups, NAMI has tons of them...

www.nami.org to find your local chapter...although I get that therapy/psych/dealing everyday can be enough and getting involved with yet another form of therapy can be overkill for some.

fyi, my fiance is bp and I am not....I love him more everyday and I understand we'll live with this illness forever in some capacity...you'll find someone who respects you and understands that this illness is biochemical in nature and will work with you to create a safe, loving, non-judgmental partnership. Hang in.

you guys are so nice =) thank you all.

hopefully i will be making some changes the next time i see my doctor, and yes, depakote is the only thing i'm taking right now. sometimes i get out of control and my mom slips me a valium and that sure does the trick to calm me down. i'm thinking i might need something for anxiety as well.
