when i'm depressed i tend to isolate and feel really bad about myself... one of the ways i try to get out of my bedroom (but still be away from other people) is to just drive around town, go down some pretty country roads, listen to something that i can sing with at the top of my lungs. i try to go on walks but those get old, walking around the same neighborhood.

anyone relate? i think i could use more distractions, maybe some that don't cost quite so much.

Walking and music are a distraction for me too. I love being on my laptop as well. I have several websites that I love that distract me (cheesy Hollywood gossip especially). Calling a reliable friend works too.

i kind of can't wait for this semester to start...

Whenever I got overwhelmed, my wife would ask me to do something. Usually something I was good at and could do without much effort.

For example, she would ask me to caulk the windows. Caulking is my gift. A sculptor could not do a window caulking like I can. I caulked all our windows, the neighbors, the school (I lived in a small town then). Caulked everywhere. Seems silly, but it did calm me.

Please don't talk about your illegal predilections. :-) I'll only have to delete them. But you can talk about what makes you happy, and it can be personal, if you want it to be.

I'm working on a book, so I try to relax by going into this other little world that I'm creating. I also like to read (same idea, I'm big on escapism.) And I spend a lot of time online.

Let us know when your book is published. I'll buy it off amazon.

I used to write, but my thoughts tend to go all over the place so I have pages and pages of stuff that always needs reorganized in order for it to make sense. So I gave that up lol. Music and going online are my major distractions at the moment. I'm addicted, and ashamed to admit, my latest obsession is perez hilton and tmz. lol. Celeb gossip can make even the most insane person feel sane compared to the hollywood people.

well now I don't feel so ashamed since I'm not the only perez fan here lol. I usually just check his page out once a day usually at night to get all the days gossip. I go through about 6 or 7 pages usually just to keep up! I'd rather get it all in one big dose instead of having to come back multiple times throughout the day. I did see the Miley stuff and it looks pretty real. who knows though.

wow you guys are addicts, haha. that's exactly why i make a conscious effort not to get wrapped up in hollywood bs. i don't watch movies (except for stanley kubrick & foreign films) and i don't watch tv, so those people mean nothing to me. i'd rather get lost in a book any day. =)

i've always been a nerd.

No no no... Off topic threads are not okay. Sheesh.

My book is a romance novel -- so I'll forgive you Cap, if you pass on it. :-) It 's in the very early stages and I write slow, so it'll be some time before I even get to the stage of submitting it to agents. Think years. But thanks for the support. I run a writing group in the bookstore I work in also. I love writing, it's a big part of who I am.

We had a thread going with some bipolar related poetry a couple weeks ago. I'd love to see more writing if anyone's got some.

You must have misunderstood me. Off topic threads are not okay. It's not my decision, it's in the HealingWell rules. I don't get to choose. Please don't lash out at me. I'm sorry you don't like the rule but there's another one as well. It's Rule # 13. Look it up while you're going over those rules again. There's a link to them over -----> there on the right.

First forgive me for being outspoken, but two things here.

First would be my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

All bipolar, all the time gets a little stale. I've been on another board like this and it was pretty dead, where when you actually posted an ON topic thread there was a few around to give pretty general answers.

I think a nice balance of on/off topic threads isn't harmful. It gets depressing thinking about your illness all the time.

Also, if this board is supposed to be polite I question this emoticon nono is that yellow thing flipping me off or what lol?

I do realize the rules, so perhaps it is me who needs to adjust by finding other less restrictive boards to post the OT threads on.

This board is popular because it is so safe. There is little chance of flame showing up because the board is moderated and has a clear set of rules, which seem to me are very understandable.

Flame boards are fine, but this is not one of them. Flame boards are also easy to find. Go to them instead of inciting here.

Off topic subjects have a much higher chance of offending someone. Such as is it said tomato or tomahto. You get my point.

If you were a new member and read some of the recent posts, would you stay? Think of others instead of only yourself.

Wouldn't you agree that OT threads are a bit different than flame threads?

I would stay to play the word games and some of the nice off topic threads in fact.

If you were responding to me, I would prefer if you would perhaps read what I wrote and not assume I was talking flame wars.

Cap can you honestly say that a name your favorite song thread, or a different kind of word game poses any risk for offending newcomers?

If so, I will respect your belief and remove my off topic posts. If not, then I think some of this is much ado about nothing.
