For those of you who didn't read it, Sherrine's message was asking about 2 little boys who have been diagnosed with ADHD but she was wondering, due to their extreme behavior, if they might not have bipolar instead.  I know a few of you have bipolar kids -- how did you know the difference?

Hi Sherrine:

I've done a little research and come up with a couple of key factors about childhood bipolar that you may want to pass on. The first is that it's important that they get the children diagnosed by a child psychologist (not just a gp or any old psychiatrist) if they want to pursue further options for these boys (who certainly sound like handfuls-- whew!)

Bipolar seems to differ from ADHD in a couple of ways: 1. Intentionality. Bipolar children get into mischief on purpose and out of anger. They are angry little beings who throw lots of tantrums, usually after their caregivers try to set boundaries. Apparently these tantrums last much longer than ADHD tantrums as well -- up to 2-3 hours!

2. They don't sleep and when they do they have terrible dreams. They wake up groggy and irritated and stay that way for some time.

3. They are generally angry or depressed. Bipolar has two states and children don't often get to experience the stable periods in the middle. So they swing back and forth pretty constantly.

4. They may make scary threats to kill themselves, jump out of cars, etc.

Hope this helps.
