Hi everyone...... I just found this site today as I was looking for help with headaches.... And to find there is a place here for people dealing with bi-polar is a big plus!! My daughter in law is dealing with bi polar and she is having such a hard time. I want to be able to help her but want to do what is best for her... My son and daughter in law have been married not quite three years and it has been a rough road for the two of them. She is a wonderful young woman and I love her to pieces but she is struggling and for every step forward, she is taking three backwards! Her doctor has her on so many medications and much of the time it appears she is in a fog. The dr suggested she go into the hospital for detoxing and she is afraid. Her family is not a great deal of help. It appears her mother is so upset that her daughter "got" this from her and she blames herself....Maybe all of you can help me be there for her and be the best mother in law that I can be for her.......thanks!

Hi Meezermom,

Wow is she lucky that she has a supportive mother-in-law like you on her side!!! I speak from experience here -- my family are really clueless and very resistant, but my in-laws are just wonderful. Welcome to the group and I hope we can be of some help. Feel free to jump right in with questions or insights. I presume you found us by looking for Topomax?

Hello and Welcome to Healingwell. Wow, it is great that you have such support for your DIL. My family does not support me with the illness at all, so it is great to have people like you. Again, welcome! :-)

Thank you for the kind welcome... I was looking up something about headaches and ran across this site and then saw you had something about bi-polar and I am trying to get everything I can to be of help to my dil! I worry about her as it seems like she is so much on a downward spiral.... she calls me crying a great deal and says she simply cannot deal with things and gets so very depressed.... She has threatened suicide a couple times, and did try to cut herself....my son got her to the hospital but there she was treated like a criminal instead of getting any help at all. She didn't actually cut, more deep scratch than anything else but I know a cry for help.... just it seems like no one is there listening to her... it seems like she has a very hard time being alone with herself...Should I always be available for her or should I not? She has asked me to go to her doctor with her and I told her I would whenever she wanted me to... I want to be supportive without being interfering. They have talked children in a few years and that may not be possible with her issues.......and I know they will not be allowed to adopt.... so guidance is appreciated!

I think as long as she has asked you to come along and help, and you feel comfortable helping, then go with her. She must trust you a great deal. It sounds like her medications are not working at all and she needs to have them reevaluated/adjusted by her doctor. If her doctor isn't listening to her, it might be time for a new doctor. I've had to change doctors before. I think several of us have. Good psychiatrists are sometimes hard to find, but worth it to get stable.

It seems like every time she goes her medications are adjusted which means every week! Then it is one is way too low then another is way too high, then add, or take away.....As I recall from her list she is one at least 13 different meds. She takes two different sleeping pills and she still can't sleep... She has gained nearly 65 pounds in the time they have been married (not quite three years) as the dr can't seem to get a birth control pill that works for her....She has usually two to three periods a month and her gyno keeps giving excuses...My son has to keep all her meds under lock and key and he fills her medication container each week........he can't trust her to have control of her own meds! From what she says, she trusts her dr! She won't consider switching as she hates change of any sort but she is spinning out of control.....

Oh, that's a tremendous number of medications. It's unfortunate she's not open to change, because between that and the birth control issue, I would have recommended a second opinion. A number of psychiatric medications (like Topomax, among others) make birth control medications ineffective. So it may be hard for her to find a birth control pill that works with her psych meds.
