Hi....I have been on depakote for years and now with break thru seizures along with the mood disorder I have been switched to ER 1000mg at bedtime.  This is a once a day dosing drug.  Needless to say I am beyond LETHARGIC and my doc wants to switch to ER 500mg to twice a day.  Is anyone doing this???????  This is a once a day time released drug and I am afraid of the overlap release and really getting zoned out or toxic.  Any experience in this area.

Thanks

Hi Shalimar,

Welcome to HealingWell. I have no experience in this area but I wanted to greet you and wish you luck. Hopefully one of the other members will have more wise things to say...

Hello Shlimar,

Welcome to HW. I wish I could say I had a lot of experience too, but I started Depakote just a few days ago. My pdoc put me on 500mg 2x a day. I am taking the ER version and he told me to take the dose at night if I get too drowsy during the day. I noticed that I space out here and there on it sometimes. If you are really concerned about it try to talk to your pdoc about it the soonest possible time, or talk to your local pharmacist. Good Luck!

Thanks Olivia....did you say you are taking the ER 500 twice a day?  Not regular depakote.  How long have you been doing that.  No luck with primary or pharmacist so I headed to those who might know and experience the side effects.  If it's a real uncommon practice I don't want to be a guinea pig.  At the moment I reduced to 750ER at night, just also worried about seizure control.  I have to say I am more alert, if only I was treating one illness.  Keep me posted what you decide to do

Tks

In the past my pdoc put me on the regular versions of meds before they put me on the ER. But not this times, I take 500 mg in the Am and 500 in the Pm. I just started taking it on this past Tuesday, so I am not sure I am much help. I know there are other people who have been on Depakote in the past and might be able to help you.

smhair  Olivia, thanks.  At least someone is taking it this way.  After a week would you write and let me know the pros.  Mostly if you are zonked in the day time.

Oops! I was wrong, I went to read my label and found out that I am taking Depakote Delayed-Release tablets. I know there is a difference between this and the Extended-Release, but I could not tell you what they are. Sorry, I just wanted to let you know.

So far I have only felt drowsy the 1st am I took it, and my sleep is more messed up. But other than that it has been pretty tolerable. I'll let you know how it went in about 2 weeks. ha ha

Olivia...I was on sprinkles for years, when I went to 500 bid I got toxic, ended up in the hosp...my blood level was too high.  However I felt OK at 750-875mg but it didn't hold the seizures.  I was happy with sprinkles, there was more flexability.  You can always mess around with that one
