Hi I am new to the boards and kind of unsure if I have bipolar or not, I have been told by friends that they think I do. I haven't seen a doctor because I don't think my symptoms are that severe.

I guess my symptoms are as follows, at times I will be seemingly very well adjusted, feeling like I love everything about the world, completely without stress or worry, feeling like I can take on the world. At these times I am happy and pleasant to my friends, girlfriend and family. Other times however I can barely stand to get out of bed. My mood is easily changed from great to horrible and it seems to last for weeks when it happens. In those down times I get depressed and start to lash out at those around me as well as have trouble completing my responsibilities. Also at times when I am in the very good mood I get to the point where I have NO worries so I don't do what I need to either. Its only in the times of moderate moods that I seem stable and responsible. I don't want to be swinging on a pendulum anymore only being the man I want to be every once in a while. I want to be stable and able to deal with my problems every day. Breaking down and sleeping all day is not acceptable and lashing out at my girlfriend for no good reason is also so hurtful to her and me it breaks my heart. I don't know what to do.

Hi JournalDan,

Welcome to the bipolar board. It sounds like a trip to the psychiatrist for an evaluation is in order. Even if you believe your symptoms "aren't that severe", if they're impacting you sufficiently enough that you can't get out of bed, they're severe. It won't hurt to have a diagnosis and a treatment program, and many bipolars can manage their symptoms quite efficiently with medications and/or therapy.

Best of luck,

Thanks for the advice, how would I go about doing what you suggest. I don't want to burden my parents with medical fees and I don't think they would understand. I work but I would not be able to afford costly bills. I guess I was just hoping good advice would be able to help me better understand my problems and deal with them. I don't really know what to do.

Hi JournalDan,

Apparently you're younger than I assumed. Sorry about that. Tell me a little more about how old you are and where you are in life (college, high school?) and I can help you a little bit more.

Thanks, Serafena.

I'm actually 22, and about to graduate here in May.

JournalDan,

I too wanted to welcome you to the HW Forum, it is great having you here.

As you have mentioned in your post, your symptoms must be affecting your life to a certain degree. We are not here to give you a diagnosis, but to give you support where needed. You said you didn't want your parents to be stuck with a bill, and that is what is keeping you from seeking help. That is perfectly understandable, but bipolar or not only a licensed professional can give you a diagnosis.

You mentioned in another post that you are attending a college/university. They usually offer their services for free to current students, that might be a great place to start. Please let us know what you decide to do.

Olivia :-)
