Our family can't stay on this roller coaster anymore and need help.
My niece has been diagnosed for 4 years with bipolar. She can not stick to anything anyone tells her. She is convinced she doesn't have bipolar yet she spends her money one night and feels like killing herself the next. She has been fired by 3 doctors, 2 crisis centers refuse to have her come back, she can't live with anyone and says she can't live by herself. She also has an eating disorder and the doctors think she may have schizoaffective disorder as well.

She is back in the hospital because she said she wanted to blow her brains out. We all try to help her as much as we can and NOTHING seems to work.

My mom is in NAMI classes. Her mom has her child that CPS took away. I live outside the state but still she calls me 15 times a day telling me she can't do this any longer. Then when we tell her she has to stick to her meds, she swears they are poisoning her...yet she swears even flour can do that sometimes.

We are worn out and don't want to keep doing this...it's exhausting. Please help!

Hi fibromama,

The hospital is where she needs to be. It sounds like her bipolar is very severe and she has lost touch with reality. Hopefully the docs will get her meds stabilized in the hospitalized and they will determine if she is schizoaffective as well. She may need more hands-on help after she gets out of the hospital: outpatient classes or daily therapy for a while, weekly visits with her doctor.

I wish I had more advice for you, but I can only recommend you talk to a mental health counselor and get some advice on how to proceed. Your niece needs some very serious care.

Good luck,

I totally understand where you are right now. Read my post that says: what to do with my sister. Your neice sounds alot like my sister. She also is having problems. I think the mental health system needs an overhaul. These conditions sometimes get ignored and it makes me feel helpless towards my sister with the same problem.  Im sorry I cant give you any other help but wish you all the best.
